It's natural to take smaller steps when backing. Even people do it. For one thing, it's because of anatomy, another is that he can't see if there's a big hole behind him or not.

Time,...Time..practice...and time....

You have to overcome their fear and teach them to move backwards, let alone extend.

How do you get him to extend forward? (I was told this, so I don't know if it works).

Cue him backwards (he has to have just GOING backwards down). Then, cue him to extend and back. Takes a bit, but they start extending eventually. But they don't do full strides. Most just move faster. Mine has reached that step....moving a bit faster...which he does move his legs a little more too.

Let's put it this way...mine has been learning to back in saddle since he was 2. His training has been very slow (due to pregnancies) and he's 5 now. he is just getting the idea to extend a bit more and to back STRAIGHT!!...

usually back in circles.....

Haha ~ I thought you were referring to the horse too... My girls are 20 months apart. (3 and 1.5 yrs) Lots of work but well worth it. My 3yr old started her horse lessons last week.

As for backing up... lots of practice. My horse learned to back up quicker and straighter with time and lots of treats!

Mine are 3 and 2 1/2 now. My 3 yr old rides my horse in the arena with me there, and she has a blast. She can stop, turn, and back him up. He listens better to her than to me...NO FAIR!!!!
heheh
