Your right, it isn't very inconspicuous to wrap your legs around your horse's neck to get him to back, but I don't actually wrap my legs around him. This is something that I learned from Perelli, it is how he teaches horses to back up. I started it bareback, I just put my legs forward and tap him on the shoulder with my feet, I don't actually wrap my legs around him. It's a bit exaggerated at first, but me legs aren't in the air or anything, my thighs don't leave his belly. It's hard to explain, but it's just teaching him to go back. When I want to move his front end around, I put my leg in front of the girth (right to go left, left to go right) so when I use both legs to forward in front of the girth, he moves his whole front end backward. Now, I just put both of my legs forward just in front of the girth to get him to back. I think that you guys are picturing me laying on my back, with my legs in the air! I am sorry, I am not very good at explaininng this, I will try to find my Perelli book that shows it.

You guys are right though, the horse has to be taught to back from the ground first, or else he just gets confused and frustrated when you get on.
