| Senior Moderator | backing pictures for horsebrat
Horsebrat, Here are some pictures of the proper position for backing. In the first picture you can see my left hand swing the lead rope to move the pony's hip over. I am standing more in front of the pony so it is easier to make corrections. The second picture is more correct from a showmanship stand point. Not as effective for "training" the straight back up. My horses will move their hip from this position by just moving my left hand back a little. But they have been conditioned to do so. In the beginning, it is easier to start more in front of the horse to get a better swing at the hip. Also, when you back have your leg matching the horses leg. As I take a step forward with my right leg, the pony's front left is taking a step back. This will help you balance and achieve a straighter back. You can also use a fence line to start out with. With the fence, you only have to control one side, the fence does a nice job on the other. I hope this helps a little.

Why thank you Spy. Unfortunately, I don't think Horsebrat has seen it yet. Maybe she will now that it is bumped back up.

Sorry Belle, havn't been on in a few days, been busy! Thank you so much for the pictures, i see now what you meant. Very good advice and i'll start working with her on that. Latley now, since she's built up more muscles for backing, she can back straighter under saddle, but she's still crooked on the ground. Thanks so much! I appreciate it.
