Backing

Now I know people like to start their QHs at 2, but backing a yearling???!!! Candy is a QH x cob and I regularly sat on her in this position as a yearling - made life easier for her new owner!!

I did that to Rusty the other day. I didn't actually put my whole weight on him, but I wanted to see how he would react to having someone over him.

whe simon is laying down in his stall in the morning, i go and lay on him...... that is one of my favorite things to do. a horse to be not on his guard totally trusts you to come in and be w/ him, it is incredible to me.

I think thats great More people should do those sorts of things with thier horses I did it with Tri, and he got so comfortable that once when I returned from a long trip. he wouldnt move. I thought !OM heck has he died? Nope, he waited till I walked up and patted his neck. Even then he only grunted at me. Teach me to leave him with a sitter.. lol

Just a caution to those sitting/leaning on their horses while they are laying down... if the horse goes to get up with your weight on them, you can unintentionally injure them. Their bodies carry us well, once they're standing. When they're getting up with us on them, they have to use muscles in ways they normally wouldn't, that aren't conditioned to a load in that direction. It can cause strains and pulls.

Even laying down, you can still unintentionally cause damage, especially the youngins. Now I HAVE laid across them, but never added my whole weight to them at ALL. I used my yearling as a pillow when he was colicking adn I had to keep him down all night, and know when he got up. Was great......NOT.

This wasn't meant to be a serious picture - at no time did I have full weight on and was only sat for a few seconds and ready to move if she shifted her weight at all. Used to sit on our dairy cows in this way and am fully aware that they can jump up at any minute!

I think it's a great way to help your young horse gain trust. If you read the horses' body language, you can tell if you're hurting them or when they're ready to get up. I lay my head on my 18 month old Quarab's belly when she is lyeing down & she just sleeps. Looks to me like the horse in the pic is not in any sort of pain or distress. I think it's cute! LOL!
