Back Soreness?

Okay, so we brought Chip home from my BO's barn...while waiting for my cousin (he brought the trailer), to arrive, I was going to hop on Chip bareback, no biggiie right?, , well I thought when I had gotten on it just spooked him and he started trotting, lol..i fell..it was fun though . So, I didn't get back on, because by then my cousin was comming. We get home, let the horses settle for a few hours, and I lunged Chip and I was going to just plop around bareback for a couple minutes...forget that! Chip did the same thing, right when I would get my leg on his back, putting the slightest pressure on his left side, he would start to trot again..I tried many diffrent ways, and it was the same each time, so finally I just felt his back, and he finched a little at a spot, the spot where my leg would go to get on. So, I massaged it pretty throughly, and turned him back out.. I have no idea why he would be sore though, it's been a week proably longer since I have ridden him, nobody else has either, unless my trainer had someone on him in lessons..which I highly doubt. Could he of gotten kicked, or bitten, and just have a bad bruise, or do you think its really sore? I don't know, because he's never really acted like that when I have tried to get on bareback...

Who knows - he could have slipped in the field, or tweaked a muscle bucking or mucking around? If he is really quite sore there leave it a couple of days before massaging again. Try ice meantime, rather than heat as it is more safter. Good luck - I am sure he will be fine in a day or two.

Where is it at? On his back or on his side?

It's on his back, a few inches from his withers, a couple inches from his spine. I thought about saddle fit, but since he hasn't been ridden... that wouldnt be it would it?

Are you sure nobody rode him? If someone else rode him the could have been posting too hard and caused his back to get sore....

Maybe someone rode him in an ill-fitting saddle?

edit: whoops, sorry, just noticed that you already eliminated that as an issue

I really doubt that he got ridden in the time that I wasn't there, because his bridle would have been left out, knowing Beverly . But remember when we were going to double up on Chip a while back when you were at my house? and he bucked? well..maybe his back was sore then too, because it's right where another rider would sit, at the back of the saddle. Maybe it finally got worse??

Those rowdy boys are always getting into trouble... maybe he rolled out in the pasture on a nasty rock or something. No telling... there's no swelling or anything? I would just keep an eye on it and see how he is in a couple of days.
