| Banned | back shoes fell off?!?!
i was on a trail with my friend and we decided to jump over these bails of hay, and before we left the barn i checked her hooves and picked them out and everything, and the next day when i came out there, i picked her front hooves and then i was going to do the back ones and i notied that one was missing, so i check them all for loosesness, and both the back shoes fell off!!! my friend that went on the trial w/ me said that it's just from jumping, i don't know if thats tha whole thing or not. (did i mention that i was in a western saddle, and she jumped and my leg hit the horn!!! lol) plz help me!

How long has it been since she's been shod? My mare has a tendency to throw her back shoes off sooner than her fronts, especially if she's due to be shod soon.

Does she normally throw shoes? Have you recently changed farrier? I'd be interested to know how long these shoes have been on too. If they weren't done too long ago, then I would be taking this up with your farrier...it makes no difference if you're jumping her or not...the shoes should stay on. |

He could have simply stepped on them. What sort of shape are the feet in? Do they look chipped? Even so, horses can step on and pull shoes and leave no damage.

It shouldn't be from jumping... more likely the shoes would come off if you went through mud.

Shoes don't normally just fall off. They come off because they are pulled off, the feet are too over grown and are due to be trimmed, or the ferrier did a poor job of placing them on. Or, the feet are too weak and brittle to hold shoes. What ever the reason, I would call your ferrier out.

Well this might happen if the shoes are put on incorrectly. Or if the 6-8 weeks were almost up. If it was like 5.5 weeks then it sould be ok that they fell off. But if it was like week 2 or 3 talk to your farrier and tell him what happened

They would not have come off FROM the jumping. I agree, probably a poor farrier job. I had a farrier once that could never shoe to keep them on, my horses threw shoes EVERY time. Then when I switched to a different farrier, the shoes stayed put the entire 6-8 weeks. (of course now I dont have shoes so I dont have to worry!

I am the person who said from jumping, i read it somewhere, guess it's not true...anywho Our fairrier, it a wannabe dumb a** stupid, make my horses back feet mule like, having my mare throw shoes, unevenly trimming UGGH!! &%#$*&$^*!!!! Gracie's hooves are all messed up, pipers less so, they were shod around 4wks ago, the shoes usualy last 6, it's cold shoeing. I am in the process of getting a new fairrier for gracie, but i dunno about piper, they may keep her with the same I just want to UGG kill the stupid farrier, his work SUCKS And theres my vent about gracies and pipers fairrier. We need a new one, period.

Yes, if your horses shoes are coming off after only 4 weeks, there is a problem. Really, if a horse is trimmed properly, the shoes should stay on for at least 8 weeks, if not more. You shouldn't let them go that long without being trimmed, but you should be able to.
