Back pain and a clicking noise

Emo has been out of work for a while, recently I have brought him back into work slowly, around 2 days a week. During this time he has been having Issues with the canter, He really hates to go into the canter and will stop dead and jump around. Once you actually get him to canter he is fine. I just though it was him being fresh. A week ago I managed to get him to walk/trot/canter without jumping around or doing anything stupid.

Yesterday I rode him and he felt slightly lame, not so much lame but just "off" he didn't want to really went to bend through his body and he was a bit over the place. The side he is usually better on he was worse, still was playing around in the canter transitions. I had my mum watch me and she couldn't pick up any lameness at all.

Today I rode him and he felt better. On his good side I had a bit of trouble with the canter transitions but got there in the end. I switched to the otherside and although he wasn't being great he was doing better than he usually is. I got him cantering in the corner, went down the short side of the arena and then he jamed on the breaks, half reared up and bucked me off, he continued to buck and then ran down the other end of the paddock.

Normal he is a very willing kind horse. Im thinking pain might be behind the misbehaving at the canter.

I got back on and walked and did a small trot but didn't want to canter again incase he was in pain.

I got off and we put him on the longe, He was fine w/t/c but when I brought him back to a walk I noticed a clicking sound comming from somewhere above his hock, this only happened every 3 or 2 or 4 step, it wasn't regular and I couldn't tell exacally where it was comming from.

Anyone care to shed some light on the situation? We have to vet comming in the next few days to see him but I just wanted some ideas before then. We think the pain is comming from his back and we have no idea what the clicking noise is.

the clicking could be his feet overgrown and just touching each other as he walks, that happens to me sometimes when it is time for the farrier.
maybe that's it i'm not sure tho

If you mean over reaching, im 100% sure its not that. Its sort of when he lifts his leg up but in not sure what side is comming from, im pretty sure its the off because thats the side it turned up on.

Sounds like he is out somewhere, personally I'd go with a chiro instead of a general vet-most vets will just give them a shot, or tell you to give them time off...whereas a chiro will fix it. You can also check out a massage therapist, if the pain is in the muscle, they will be able to help with that aspect of it.

I agree get a chiro out there or a Holistic vet if you have one in your area.

Also finding a reiki master that works with animals could help as well.

I was having a very similar problem and we determined that my horse had a mental problem or he was in a lot of pain somewhere. I had the chiropractor come out and adjust him, and they should also show you how to do it yourself for maintenance. Gave him a couple days off, and he was a completely different horse. What a difference an adjustment made. My horse plays rough in the pasture so he usually needs one approx every 8-10 weeks to keep him feeling good.
Hope that helps!
