| Senior Member | back cinch??!?!?!
My trainer told me that it would be good if I got a back cinch for my saddle, cause its kinda being pulled down on the front, so when it is done up, it's too tight on her withers, and really high off her back. I just don't know anything about back cinchs! Do I have to measure for them? If so, how? What attachements should I expect to come with it? What is the average cost? (in Canadian dollars) Anything you know would be a great help, becasue I've NEVER had to use one before! |

Hmmm, well I am not a western rider, but I think that back cinches are used for extra precaution, not to hold the saddle down...ie they are not supposed to be tightened up. Maybe the saddle fit is wrong if you are having that problem...I am sure the western people will give you some good advice

no, the saddle fits fine... its just weird... it was the only saddle we could get to fit, so its actually a barrel racing saddle, and as far as i know, alot of those tend to use the back cinch. my trainer said i would have to do it up kinda tight... not lose and hanging like in the rodeos, but not nearly as tight as a front cinch.... I don't know... the whole conversation confused me... but I have had other people tell me I should think about getting one....

Wait, So u want it to keep you saddle from sliding up?? I think in confused, lol. I Know when i use mine it is for the purpose of when i run it keep the saddle from popping up in the back. I dont think you would want it tight enough to keep from sliding forward. Maybe you should think about somethine else. Let me know if your saddle is sliding forward and i might could help you....?

Well, lol. Then that is the point, BUT you barely want it touching you horse, like a wee bit hanging is great. If you tighten it you horse will more then likely buck. Hope the back cinch helps u!! - Meg

Thanks! Do you now if I'm supposed to measure for it? I've never used one before!

Ok... here's the thing. I know you said your saddle fit correctly, but it doesn't sound that way to me. Unless you are running barrels (where you're really forward in the saddle maybe?) or doing heavy duty trail rides or roping or something, in all technicality you shouldn't need a back cinch. Regardless - here's the info. If your horse has never worn a back cinch before, you cannot start with it "almost as tight as the front cinch". She's either gonna buck you off or get too sore. Usually, when we rope (or whatever) we tighten the back cinch and then hop off and loosen it when we're done. So, you can't ride that way forever, it'll just be really hard on her. Regardless, if you do buy a back cinch - buy a thicker one because of what you're using it for. Make sure it's at least 3 inches in the center (they go up to six! LOL) I don't believe they're sized in length... probably just "horse size". You'll probably expect to pay $50-60 for a good one. You'll also need two billets (those straps that hang from the back of your saddle) and a connecting string (not sure of actual name) on the bottom to connect it to your front cinch. Most come standard with it, but if the one you buy doesn't... connect it to that front cinch! LOL Otherwise you'll flank your horse and end up on the ground before you know what happened (lots of personal experience here... LOL). Hope that helped. -Alex

Back cinches aren't mean to be tight. From what I know, their only purpose is to keep the saddle from popping up if the horse bucks. If your saddle is popping up in the back, something is wrong. It shouldn't do that if it fits. Is it still popping up even when you're sitting in it?
