Baby's day out: update

Just got an invitation today to take a trail ride to a picnic site. My three-year old, Romeo, has been out on this ride several times and has done well on it, but we've only gone there and back. Today we'll go there, I'll tie him up for an hour or two, and then we'll go back home. In addition, he's not going with his usual trail buddies, but with a pony we've gone out with twice. Any suggestions for making this the most enjoyable situation possible? I'm particularly concerned about keeping everything good while he's tied up. Many thanks in advance for suggestions; we're leaving in about four hours!

Update:

That was (almost) the worst ride ever. Romeo stumbled and fell on his head trotting on the flat, almost flipping over. I can't believe I stayed on. His knees were a little scraped, but he seemed fine otherwise. We decided to keep on going at a walk. Then when we were almost there, some burr got up his rear, and he refused to go forward! I squeezed, he backed up. I made him go in circles, and we went forward a little, and then he lowered his head and hunched his back! No bucking--thank goodness, he's never done that with me. We went forward a little more, and by that time I was a wreck; I decided to go home. I knew that he might perceive it as a reward for his bad behavior, but there comes a point when you have to follow your gut, and my gut said "get off this horse now!"

We're going to go on the same ride tomorrow and make him do it.

Any gently supportive comments would be welcome; please nothing too negative; I feel bad enough already.

I'm sure he'll be fine! At least you'll have company for him by going with the other pony, and I'm sure if you are relaxed he will be too! Have fun on your picnic!
