The reverse psychology really does work....

When I first starting round penning my mare, she had no idea of what she was supposed to do. When I'd ask her to "ho", she would stop & just face forward. I would call her & try to get her to come into the center...but not knowing what the format was, she wouldn't. So I'd scoot her off & make her work a little, and then try again. It took a couple of times & she caught on. Now she comes right in without hesitation.

For a while my big gelding would not let me close enough to put the fly mask on...he was just being a bu.tthead. So I'd chase him off & kept him moving for a short time. Then I'd stop nearby & stand there. He'd come over to me, I'd reach up, put the fly mask on, kiss him & walk away.

Such a simple concept and it works wonders

Kind of a side question, why are there not halters that are secured with velcro? I prefer a breakaway style anyway and there are some very strong velcros.
Yeah horses are strong too.
My mare is tall and loses her buckle secure halter in the pasture a few times each month by getting pushy with trees.
It is hard to get it on her because she is very tall and I have to reach way up to get there, she drops her head but not as nicely or for as long as she should when she is in the open pasture. This is why I thought of velcro.
I really need a halter to bring her in as the pasture is across a public road from the barn, land on both sides of the street. So if she shucks it out there I have to bring the back up one to her.

I think a velcro fastening halter would be a benefit to people with foals and yearlings too as they are always sticking their nose/head where it doesn't belong and get their halter caught.
