Aug. 8-10 Shimek Trail Ride! Photos!

Doug and I spent 3 days at Shimek State Forest over the weekend, with a group of friends. The weather was GORGEOUS -- cool nights, and day temps in low 80's, and very low humidity. Unheard of for Iowa in August! We had a ball, and Love4April (Deanna) joined us to camp Friday night and to ride on Saturday. We rode 5 hours straight on Saturday morning, and then rode out in the late afternoon for a short ride.

The only bad thing was the horse flies...those things are HUGE and they land on a horse's butt and it makes some horses go ballistic! We were prepared, -- I had gotten some quarter sheets from Lindsayanne's raraequus site last year, and put them to use! They worked FANTASTIC. Thanks, Lindsayanne!!

JR with his flysheet! Doug kinda cut his head off...

Dusty's fly sheet...Doug is finishing cinching up

Most of the group, in the pines!

Check out my other post...Sunday morning, Doug and I got to ride a GORGEOUS Missouri Foxtrotter!!!

Looks like the mud was better this time around! Glad you got to enjoy the great weather--we had nice stuff here but I had to work all weekend. Love the quarter sheets and the big smiles all round

Yes, the mud was somewhat dried up...trails were in lots better shape. We did find some sloppy areas, but it was much better!

Oh, I love the pics!! Yeah, I could still kick my daughter in the butt for taking out the memory card. Oh well, I'm hoping I can get the ones off the memory of the camera.

You guys would love this park. The trees are so tall and gorgeous and there is trail after trail after trail. The campsite is pretty neat too. Each site had there own tie up, fire ring and if they got there early enough (Thanks Bonnie for saving a spot for April) you could even get your own stall. It was an awesome time!!! I want to go back as soon as possible...

They really work LA!!! The palomino goes absolutely BONKERS when those big horse flies land...the sheets prevented some accidents, I am sure! Thanks!

I bet that was a fun trail ride. Good thing you had those quarter sheets- I know what those horseflies can be like! They leave huge welts, too!
