There's an auction I go to occasionally. And it's not a bad auction. Some horses do come in a little too skinny, but the majority of them are healthy. It's a 50/50 chance at the one I go to. I've seen some really good horses there that I've wanted and some that were just plain "crazy"(didn't get the correct training). I rode a pony in the auction for an old friend's sister and he was a sweet pony. And the barn I kept Fiona at got a pony from up there and he's a great pony! W/T/C and jumps. This auction also does trail rides with their own horses who get sold also. The people that run it are really nice people.

It all depends on the area though.

my moms freind went to and auction about a year ago and bout this really sad looking horse... now he is a champion barrel racer and turns out he has perfect blood lines and they sold him as a gelding when he is a stallion.. so you might get lucky like she did but i always feel bad for the "ugly" horses (not that any horse is ugly because none are) who don't get taken home and get sent to slaughter.. that is why i rarely go to auctions becuase i would come home with 20 horses

theres alot of good horses at auction- alot of times people have a family horse and can't or don t have time to sell it- or a divorce -or whatever and they take the horse there thinking it will have a good home somehow. Then you have the hack stables that use the horses til they are thin and send them to auction sept -sometimes later when they can' t make money with them and dont want to feed or pay to have someone feed the horses for the winter. They rebuy from a dealer towards spring. Alot of nice horses go for meat towards winter- there just isnt anyone buying and everyone sells so they dont have to buy hay. Just make sure you have your own coggins done at the auction-or keep then isolated home and get the coggins done right away. Most of them have a vet on the site and you can get a coggins from him- dont trust the coggins that they have already-half of them are filled out wrong or they are for a different horse unless its a horse with odd or outstanding markings- tatoo or brand. I got alot from auction and got them home and gave them away after i got weight on them- dont let weight bother you if you are there - hacks dont normally have teeth or worming at some of the stables- they just use them up and throw them out- . I got a beautiful app mare from the kill pen because she reared - she was 7 yrs old and is the nicest horse- she reared because she still had her wolf teeth yet - teeth were sharp and she was just plain scared. Once she settled in she was fine - teeth were done right away by my vet and she put on weight -shes a super good horse and gentle as they come. Smart too.

My best friend has gotten a good half of her 20+ horses from the Heritage Farm Auction in Mass. I also got my gelding there (who is a doll) and a mare (I sold due to she was insane). So it depends. On a whole, I think its good if you're looking for a nice horse for cheap and are willing to take a little gamble. My gelding worked, the mare didnt. Depends on the person and the horse. The mare now gets along great with her new owner.

As long as the auction is reputable and not just selling ribs with skin on them.

I got my barrel horse from an auction. She was only a yearling and she was crzy but after working with her she sedle down. We was told that she was tooken a way from her mom when she was 2 months old and was keept in a small stall with no food or water intell we got her. She was a relly good barrel horse she probily would of been a champion but she died in 02. She got namonya relly bad. I would go to the auction agane to get anuther horse whene ever I have the money to buy anuther horse.

One of the boarders at my farm bought an appy at the local horse auction. He is really nice but he had some reall issues at first. She got dumped several times and ended up spending some money on a trainer but she loves his a whole lot and thinks he was worth the risk. She named him Chance because she decided to take a chance on him.

There is an auction around here and it's mainly broke and well ridden, well mannered horses.
http://www.ab-auction.com/

The tack is not good though. You need to REALLY look close at it.

My boss will sometimes sell at auction when he has to get rid of stock for the new babies. When doing this he has a bottom price so that the slaughter guys won't buy.
He also takes his to auction out in Missouri (yeah...we are in NH!)

so...you get a 50/50.
I suggest showing up early to walk around and inspect them

Our Auction in Hickory PA has great deals on supplies and tack. Lead ropes for $2-$3, neatsfoot oil for $5/gallon, hoof picks and mane combs for .50. I love going and getting my basci supplies there and looking at the horses. Can't wait to gi in two weeks to the next one.
