Smile At least we're bonding...

Well even if I'm not riding Midas right now, at least we are bonding! I go out everyday and for the past couple of weeks have been grooming really well, then I go to wash his feet off in the wash rack, apply all of his ointments and what not, then go for a walk and usually let him hand graze on some grass for a little while. During the day he stays with 3 other horses in a paddock. At night, he stays out by himself (with horses in neighboring paddocks though).

I undid the chain to his paddock today, went in then turned towards it to redo the chain before I went to get Midas. He was eating about 10 feet away. All of a sudden I almost lost my balance because something had nudged me in the bottom! Midas of course! After giggling to myself I felt pretty proud because this was the first time Midas had ever come to me in the paddock without me interfering! Usually when I go to get him when he's eating he even pins his ears at me and grumpily lets me get him. What a nice change of pace. He's such a good boy.

Thats so good to hear hannah!! Im really glad you are bonding with midas and not giving up on him. He will come good i know it, and in the meantime those lesson horses are still good to ride right?! I am having the same great feeling with cadbury, we are finally starting to bond, and he is finally starting to trust me. He has become friendly and cute, not that he wasnt ever friendly, but i am amazed at how much he enjoys my company these days, its such a good feeling, and i am glad both of us get to experience it!!

Yes, it's a good feeling to know he's bonding with me. For the first week or so I could tell he wasn't all that comfortable with me. I'm beginning to get to know him a lot better too.

And yes, there are lesson horses to ride. I have my lesson that I pay for on Wednesdays, and then I ride one of the lesson horses to exercise and train him on Tuesdays. I also had a great ride on that horse today, so I was just happy overall.

Good on you! I am glad you are happy, and i cant wait for the day that you and midas can go riding. Do you know how long before he gets better? I guess you quizzed the vet like mad, thats what i would have done!! I guess he is finally putting his trust in you. I know cadbury didnt put his trust in me at first, cos he thought i would be like the others, have a go and then pass him onto someone else weeks or months later, i guess now he knows as well as i do that its for keeps, even if he is a pain sometimes!! Maybe its the same with midas, he has finally realised your not giving up on him, so he trusts you. Horses are incredibly smart like that hey..

Yeah. I really doubt/know that Midas was never abused, in the beginning it was more that he just tolerated me, he wasn't particularly fond of me though. Now he really seems to enjoy my company, which is a great feeling for me!

Aww, thats great I think that bonding is just as important as riding. It is a great feeling to have a horse want to be with you!!! Great job

That is soo nice, Isabel has started going that too, before she used to walk away in her stall, now she comes to greet you. Its amazing how powerful they are, its like being in the popular group (only if you want to though, otherwise the group you want to be in)

Yes, I think I am beginning to realize there is much more to horses than just riding too. I was fortunate with Buddy to never have any major health problems and never have him be unrideable, so I've never really been in this situation before. I still miss riding like crazy, and riding the lesson horses makes me almost depressed because I long to do it with my horse.
