Well i was wondering if you could critique my paint mare's movement for western pleasure. I have a video of her lunging and being ridden.

But in the videos she has only been in training for 2 months. But i just want to know what you think so far.

here are the videos

Lunging-
Riding-
Also if you look at her conformation (if you have the time) These are not the greatest pictures but its all i have right now....

I am waiting to get her reg. APHA (we have to get the dam's papers)...do you think she will fit in with the APHA horses? I wanted to do halter and western pleasure for the APHA shows.

Thanks for much

Nicole

Hi there! First off, thank you so much for this thread, its amazing!!!!
I know lots of people have asked you things, so don't feel pressured to answer my question if you don't have time... consider it last priority! Thanks in advance if you find time to get it done!
This is my 6y/o Hanoverian gelding, Eddie. (CR Franz Marc is his show name). I bought him to be my Jr. Hunter horse, and up until my injury, I was getting used to him in the Childrens hunters. My trainer has been doing him in the greens. Last year, he did the 1st year greens (3'6") and placed in the top 10 in the nation I believe. This year he has done a few shows in the 2nd years (3'9") with 3 championships out of 5 shows. What do you think of him? As far as:
  • Major Strengths
  • Major weaknesses
  • Jumping form
  • movement
Also, he has always been very calm and easy, however, he recently began pulling and getting on the forehand coming out of the corner to the jumps. I know there are many exercises we can do at home to help prevent this from happening, but as a judge, what do you want to see the rider doing when this behavior occurs? Also, going the second direction in a flat class he tends to get strong... not bad, and nothing near getting excused from the class, but enough that he does not do as well as he would, what do you have to say about that?

This is him with one of my trainers on him, he is only jumping about 2'3" here which is why he is not jumping in excellent form.
Same trainer as above riding. This is at home, and he is pretty relaxed, an moving almost as nicely as he will go.
His first time jumping 3'6"
A flat class, breaking from the canter. (Notice how much more tense he looks then the first flat picture!)
First time over 3'9"
This is the show I tried him at... my first time to ride him! We are jumping 2'9" at the highest (thats why his head and neck are poor i belive)

Thank you so much, and remember, do feel pressured to answer all, or any of my questions! And, if you have time, this is my little sister on her ponies... the black pony is her first pony and that picture is from about a year ago, and the second picture is her pony she has now. She was begging me so I told her I'd post them, but don't do them if you don't want! If you do, then just say anything... dont worry about getting too specific!
Passing Fancy (aka Fancy) 25 y/o (now retired) welsh pony mare.
Moonshadows Rise N' Shine (aka Gator) 11 y/o Dutch Warmblood Pony.
Thanks a ton! (By the way, all of them are thumbnails, and can be enlarged if you click on them!)

hey I'm so glad you made this thread there is SOOOO much I don't know when it comes to showing but firstly do judges care if you're wearing chaps or not (western quarter horse shows) and does they care whether your tack has lots of silver etc.
and does it make a difference if your ride one handed or two handed like will someone riding one handed get placed above someone riding two handed?
your help is greatly appreciated

ok i normally don't take advice from a judge because they are all different and have different opinions but i thought what the heck i'll give it a go.

ok my first horse is Hez Shameless aka. Garth a 14yr old, 16.1h Paint gelding. i show him in everything but mainly wp, showmanship, horsemanship, and just started doing trail. i also take him in HUS and equitation. he does excellent at open shows but not as good at breed shows. i don't take him in the loping classes at the breed shows because of his ugly, ugly lope(i'm sending him to a professional trainer to fix it). well enough of my talking, here are some pics and a few videos of Garth:

now for the videos(these were taken of him after 1month of not being able to ride him):

this next one is my 2yr old, 16h Paint filly Sugars Always A Hit aka. Sugar. she is Impressive bred and out of Invaders Little Bit and Select Hit by Designated Hitter. she will hopefully be my wp champion. right now she is suffering from an abscess so we had to take her out of training. i don't have any real recent pics of her but as soon as i get some i'll post them. well tell me what you think of her! here are some pics and one short video of me riding her for her first time trotting and another short video of her free longing:
her at 6months:

starting her show career(she was a yearling in these pics):

Hello! I'm well thank you, and how are you? First year showing... I'm excited for you. That's a pretty big question... could you let me know a little more specifically what you're curious about, and I'll do my best to give you helpful recommendations?

Hey, you're welcome. Glad you enjoy it. You've got a lovely horse, lucky girl! Eddie looks like he'll take you a long way in the show ring.

Major strengths... that he is bold enough for a trainer to ride in open and steady enough for you to take him into junior classes... his conformation makes it look pretty easy for him... and he seems to put more into the larger courses, like he enjoys the challenge. Weaknesses... from photos it's hard to be sure but I would guess he gets a little bored with low/easy courses and doesn't put quite the same gusto or effort into the round, as he's putting more out in the pics over larger fences than the smaller jumps. Same thing with the jumping form... lovely but nicer over the larger fences than in the 2'9" pics. There were just the 2 movement shots really, looks as if he has a pretty scopey trot.

Both situations are Eddie getting in a bit of a hurry, so either over fences or on the flat, I would want to see a rider keep cool and not allow her horse to get "hot" and rush. It's better to check him, half-halt or whatever is needed, and keep him mindful that you're the "pilot", than to carry on to save the class and allow him to get away with it. Once he gets away with it once in the showring he'll try it again next time, anticipating and getting strong. If he only does it with you and not your trainer, then you'll have to be the rider to correct him in the showring where he's caught "red-handed". It might blow your class, so pick one that didn't cost a tonne of money to enter... and ride like normal. If he gets even a little rushed, correct him firmly even if it means he breaks or loses form. If you have to do this a few classes in a row, do it, it'll be worth it. Afterwards, he will remember that he can't get strong and get away with it, even at a show. Good luck.
