Are you supposed to put shutters on the back of the house?

Every where I look, I only see shutters on the front of houses. Is it inappropriate for them to be on the rear of houses?

Hee, hee-- we ONLY have shutters on the back of our house!

Actually, though, that's because the back of our house is really the front. The foundation was poured wrong, and it's a modular home, so they had to put it backwards, I guess.

I think it's more of a money saving thing. It costs more to add shutters (at least it was when I ordered my new modular) so we put them on the street side where everyone sees the windows.

I think it is just a way to cut costs. The sides of a house that face the street typically have shutters.

When shutters were actually being used, they would have been around the whole house since they served a purpose.

Since they are purely ornamental today, you only find them on the front of the house. But, back in the 1800's and further they were all around. Most of the shutters you find today don't even work or have hinges. They are just screwed directly into the wall.

Yeah, ours will be for looks only, but I just wondered if we'd be the only crazy folks with shutters on the back. I think they dress up the houses nicely, so any help is needed, LOL!!

You may be the only crazy folks, but it won't be because of the shutters.

I live in a community that is from the 1600's so many of the houses still have the shutters all around.

Not going to argue that point

Also, do you properly measure the shutters from the board frame around the top and bottom or is it the length of the window itself. Me thinks it's the window + the frame, but I want to do it right
