Are Donkeys and burros the same animal?

They look different. I was just trying to figure if their the same animal and if Burros are wild and donkeys domesticated?

I'm pretty sure they're the same. The ones in the wild probably look different because they haven't had what the domesticated ones have had. Same with the mustangs...

Donkeys come in a variety of sizes from minature to mammoth they sometimes LOOK different, but most are genetically the same animal just sized differently. There are a few seperate Breed Types with in the donkey genetics butmost have never had a paper trail documentation of bloodlines so all are considered to be a type instead of a Breed with in the donkey genus. But basically the Burro is what is known as the Standard donkey. There are two heights recognized with in the standard division large and small standard. Basically the difference between a shetland pony and a POA. The Mammoth donkey is the largest at horse sized and the Minature is also known as the scilian or medeteranian donkey. Most mammoths sized donkeys are Catalonian or Poitou bloodlines. OH yea and the "Wild" donkeys of North america are just previously domesticated donkeys gone feral. There are no true populations of 'WILD" donkeys in the US

Donkeys come in a variety of sizes from the Miniature Mediterranean (under 36 inches) to the elegant Mammoth Jackstock (14 hands and up ). The rare French Poitou donkey, characterized by it's huge head and ears, and very thick, shaggy, curled black coat, can stand 14 to 15 hand high. (There are estimated to be about 400 purebred Poitous left in the world today.)
The types of donkeys are labeled by their sizes; 36" and under, Miniature Mediterranean, 36.01-48", Standard, 48.01" to 54" (jennets) or 56"; (jacks), Large Standard, and 54/56" and over, Mammoth Stock. There are no real populations of BREEDS of donkeys left, such as the Catalonian, Majorcan, or Andalusian. Modern donkeys can strongly resemble these ancestral breeds in TYPE, but are not classified as those breeds unless they have traceable pure-bred pedigrees to those lines.

Donkey, Burro, ***, *******, jennet, Miniature Donkey, Mammoth, Jackstock, standard, Mexican Burro - they are all terms for Donkeys.
