Are all auction horses rescues??

I don't feel that they are if you bid against somebody most likely you aren't rescuing them at all... this drives me crazy when people say look at the rescue I got at the auction and there is nothing wrong with the horses.. in fact it is perfectably usable when they bought it.. the only auction horses I see as rescues are the ones that are on their last leg and you make the first and only bid on the horse and it is so low you might as well be paying for a new halter or bridle.. NOT EVERY AUCTION HORSE IS A RESCUE!!!

I just got my 20 year old pony back for free because the person I sold her too thought she was sick and couldnt' pay a vet bill but I really don't consider her a rescue... yeah she is under the wheather and older but come on ...

Sorry just a little vent and this is just my OPINION

I rode a girl's pony in an auction. They asked me to ride it for them to show it off when its number came off. And the thing was a GOOD pony! Well, nothing wrong with it, except an old cosmetic scar on one leg that didn't bother it.

The auction in my area really isn't a "rescue horse" type place. You get some NICE horses going through there.

I agree with you Peggy, when I think of rescues, I think about abused and neglected horses, or ones bound for slaughter and given good homes. Many nice horses go to auctions, and so do nice people looking for those nice horses.

Dolly came from an acution, I didnt buy her from it though, but she was at one. No, I would say look at my rescue(if I bought a horse from an auction.) Unless it is clearly an all meat buyer actuion, then I would say, I bought her from an meat feed lot. Yes, Dolly could have been sold to a meat buyer, but she is not a rescue, she is just a horse who was at an auction. So I agree with you, i think.

A resuce to me is not a horse who was "saved" from an auction, it's a horse that was either going to slaughter, or was abused, nelgected.

See Dolly is my rescue! kidding, she is no rescue I don't think there were any or many meat buyers there , even though she came form an auction.

thats just my opion as well.

In the scheme of things is this really something to complain about? (I didn't say you couldn't post...it's a free world, I'm just questioning if this post gives off the right "vibe".) If someone believes they "rescued" an animal and feels good about saving it (from whatever fate it might have met, good or bad) isn't it enough that another animal has a home and that someone feels like they made a difference to that animal? I think energy is better spent doing something about over-breeding and neglect and trying to welcome people into the Horse Forum family with open arms, rather than gripping about people are trying to do their part, don't you?

Just my two-cents...it might not even be worth that. I just hate seeing people having their feelings hurt over trivial things.

That is the main reason I don't give money to rescues or help donate to "save" these horses. If you buy a horse at an auction then resell it at a profit you are a dealer, not a rescue. But any dealer that calls themselves a rescue sells more horses. When I bought horses at the sale, I had a $300 limit per horse. If it went over that, someone else could have it. Why would I pay $600 for a horse that is on a feedlot when I know the meat buyers aren't giving that kind of money.
I have a silly question though. If there is no more slaughter, what are they supposed to "rescue" these horses from? How can they even call themselves rescues?

I have no problem with people being proud of thier sale barn purchase it just drives me crazy that so many people think they are rescuing when they aren't ...

I have not pointed any fingers nor am I going too I just tend to see alot of thread that show a "rescue" that is fine physically and healthy looking that is more then usable .. I am stating an opinion I have .. isnt' that what this forum is about??

I find more rescues in backyards then I have at auctions.. of course I don't go to auctions much anymore either and when I do I don't stay for the horses... I get sick of Jim Bob riding the obese horse though saying he got it last month from this old man that was starving it blah blah

ok..I have brought them home on 3 legs...even the humane society wouldn't take Thunder-(I think he would be classed as a two legged horse at that time...) They were just going to put him down, but I got him instead, but he didn't go to the auction house. But he was indeed a rescue-one of the worst cases I have done. Now Ford...he was on the meat wagon...I had them pull him off of one. Nice Belgian, so slightly foundered, it doesn't even show up in signs anymore. His fault and reason for being in a butcher box? He is too small. But at the time he was in that trailor, and all we could see was that big kind Belgian eyeball looking at us...I didn't know what was wrong with him. I just told the guy, I want that horse, right there-I'll give you $600 for him. Off that trailor he came, and home with me.

Not ALL horses go to the auction houses are rescues when we get them, that is true. Parts missing, KNOWING no one else would take the chance on them, after all, you could be bringing home a horse to die. THOSE to me, are the rescues.

I would say not! My Big gelding is the only horse I have ever purchased from an auction and he was certainly no rescue. He was a very well taken care of and greatly loved 'A' circuit hunter horse. His owner could simply no longer keep him.
