I've met some as you described, and I've met some that are so lazy you can't get them to move. I've seen the same with tb's, qh's, morgans, mixed breeds, ponies, mares, geldings, studs. You absolutely can not go by the breed. You must go by the horse. Now of course breeds get their reputations from somewhere, and arabs do tend to have a lot of energy and be "hot." You just have to know how to channel that energy into something productive. From what I know about you, I believe that you have the ability to do that. So whether the horse is what you'd call your *typical* arab or not, I'm sure you would be more than able enough to handle him.

Hi,

I rode a arabian a few years back, he was a stud for a little while, then gelded. I dont think i have met a nicer horse. he was a little energetic, but a true pleasure to ride, very very comfortable, and a very willing horse. Keep in mind these horses were ment for running in deserts for many years, he was a very controlable horse, he liked to run, but he always obayed what u asked. Arabs are one of my favorite breds, although some of them can be spirited, i find that they have wonderful personalities also.

All the Arabians and arab crosses i know have a spook in them. It is not a bad spook but it seems to be there in all of the ones i have ever met.

Arabians are one of the few breeds that allow stallions to be shown by youth.
Arabians are a great family horse!
To believe all horses of one breed is a certain way is wrong! To do so only shows that person's lack of experience with that breed!

If the Arab is crazy then it is usually because of one of 2 reasons....it was made that way by poor handling and training or it is more sensitive that the person handling it.
It has been my experience that Arabians are sensitive horses. They do best with people who are just as senstive as they are.
All horses are smart... I prefer to say that Arabs are more sensitive.

Find some Arabian owners and breeders to talk to...look on the Arabian Horse Association's website, check out the Youth National Championship Shows photos.

Learn about a breed and go actually experience it. Horses are horses there are good and bad in every breed. Don't miss out on what could very likely be a wonderful experience simply because of breed prejudice...and ignorance.

well said Sandra, arabs are spirited and sensitive but can make excellent family horses with correct handling. My older sister's arab mares are quite variable but my eight yr old sister can safely ride the quiestest of them and she uses the same mare to give lessons to a local kid who was a total beginner when we met him.

Arabians (generally) are very sensitive and in-tune to their rider/handler. I would not call them wild, or crazy. They are an excellent family horse.

In my experience, even a very spirited Arabian will calm and train easily with a gentle handler. They aim to please and quickly conform to the wishes of a caring, kind and compasionate handler.

I think they have the stigma of being wild and crazy because of their very flashy nature. Head high, tail high, they always seem to be dancing and prancing.

I've seen Quarter Horses blow up under pressure and in fact the most dangerous horses I've ever ridden or trained were Quarter Horses - definitely not Arabs. Went to the QH Breeder's Classic one year and saw tons of un-ruly, wild, and downright dangerous Quarter Horses.

In my personal opinion, Arabians are intelligent enough to know the experience of the handler and seem to adjust accordingly. This isn't saying you sould rush out and get a green broke 3 yr. old stallion! You have to use common sense in choosing an appropriate horse, but I will say Arabs seem to be far more intelligent and sensitive than most breeds.

Arabians happen to be a special area of mine. Many people say that training Arabians is difficult or that the are tough horses to be around. The trick to training an Arabian is that you have to be smarter than they are. Most people who claim that Arabs are crazy (after working with one)don't have that quality.

Arabians for the most part are really a smart breed. Even if they are spooky, or energetic they don't do stupid things. They do what I call an "arab spook" where they just jump in place, but don't bolt, and don't unbalance you. This isn't the case for all Arabs i know, but it is for most that i know.
