| Senior Member+ | Arab Gelding - Critique please
Hi this is my Arab gelding. I think he has pretty good confo but he never does too well in the shows against the quarter horses and really young and typier horses. So I thought I would ask everyone here at HGS 26 year old Arab (not sure if he is full or not but have had Arab breeders tell me he looks full and even think he is related to their arabs) |

I don't know much about arabs so I can't really say but I like to see a smoother topline. Also, I think arabs should have a flater croup. Could be wrong tho. As far as under saddle, I like to see a horse that gives his jaw to the bit keepin his head almost vertical to the ground. He's a cutie though. That's cool he's so old! Edit: As far as showing goes, I've seen arabs do real well in open schooling shows. They just had the nice slow gait and kept their neck low with the face vertical to the ground.... |

Just an FYI he does drop his head low. The pic of him in hunts eat with me is him being a bart about backing up. The western pic is also just a bad one where he was hyped up because we were going in to do reining. Around here if its not a QH then they don't like it (usually) so he never does too well except in saddleseat. He will drop his head down like a QH and lope but will also collect nicely. He is as I said old and he is not a purebred (supposedly). And as for head vertical, I prefer them to nose out a little as long as they are balanced and collected. He used to be a dressage horse actually but I do not ride dressage. So I retrained him to do western, barrels, saddleseat, jumpers, hunters etc

i am surprised he doesn't do well in the halter classes, my trainer has a veyr similar looking arab (24) who still cleans up against all the other horses, would kick my warmbloods butt in halter as well as some of the pretty paints at our barn. but he really knows how to stand perfectly square and do that neck extension thing that makes the arabs look soo pretty. your guy is very nicely put together the only thing that might fault him is his sway back but that's because the guy is 26! he has a nice sloping shoulder, good legs and neck ties in very nicely. i woudl personally just work on how he stands in the class and see if that gets you further. attitude is everything !! |

Yes he is 26 or older (thats the vets lowest age he thought he was when we bought him, he said 18 to 22years at that point) so his back is getting swayed which in a class of horses that were his age I would think it not a prblem. The problem is that he is older than teh horses he shows against and judges dont ever ask his age. I have always really liked his confo. He did get placed 6th out of 35 horses at state fair in a class of saddletype geldings 10 years and older. So he was showing against horses half his age. This is the picture from that class.... ![]() As you can see teh competition was stiff with a lot of high dollar show horses and not many old ones. I was very happy with that judge. Most times they go to what ever is flashy and barely look at conformation. |

I think he is a very good looking boy, especially for his age. Around here if its not a stock horse it isn't going to place in the open shows regardless of how nice they look. But to be able to show in that many divisions is a great accomplishment, and I think you should be proud of him even if the judges don't like him! You might try open shows by your local arabian club, he should have a better chance there.
