Apple seeds dangerous for preg. mares

I just read the post about the horse that choked on apples (thank goodness she's going to be ok! Choke in horses is soooo scary!), and it got me to thinking about apples and pregnant mares. Something that we have yet to post about (at least I haven't seen a post about it). "Things that are dangerous to the unborn fetus"

A couple of things I have heard are:
1. Apple seeds contain scienide poison? (I think it's scienide, but it does contain a poison) and is dangerous to the unborn fetus. So I never feed apples to my mares (you can core it and feed it, but I just make a rule , no apples. Inevitably someone would forget)

2. Devil's Claw- comes from a root/plant and is used in some suppliments, usually for joints. It is a natural occuring substance used for pain, much like aspirin (but I hear, not as effective). It can cause a fetus to abort. It is on the label not to use the product on pregnant mares, but it is not readily noticable.

Does anyone know of others? Specifically relating to fetus's or foals?

Wow, never heard of the apple thing before. We rarely feed our horses apples anyway.....we usually feed carrots, and store bought horse treats.(And if Im eating a peppermint or a flavored ******...I let one of the horses lick it).

dont worry about the apple seed, there is Cyanide in them but its about .000001% of the make up of an apple seed. we learned about it in my biology class. humans would have to eat about every single apple seed in the world just to feel the affect of the cyanide in it. so i doubt a 1200 pound horse will feel the affect of one apple let alone 500 hunderd! im not sure about the affect of an apple on a fetus but i dont think the cyanide is a factor in it.but im definatly going to go and research it just to make sure! ill post any info i find! :0)

i know you arent supposed to use any kind of steriod in pregnant mares. dont know exactly why but i had a horse that needed a shot of steriod and the first question the vet asked was there any way she was pregnant. if so he wouldnt give it to her. also the new all in one wormers (tapeworms) are not tested safe for pregnant mares either. i have also had a vet tell me not to give a rabies vaccination to a pregnant mare. thats all i can think of now..

Hypersensitive animals react faster to the Cyanide in apples. I know a few humans that get sick and have a "cyanide poisoning" reaction from eating apple seeds.....

FESCUE is poisonous to Pregnant mares, well, not fescue itself, but an endophyte that grows on it.
