| Senior Member+ | APHA/QH bloodlines and selling price
Hey everyone... I used to post here... Just decided to pop in again. I had a question for you all. I have a horse that I bleieve is 100 % foundation bred. His bloodlines go back to Stormy Hancock, Joe Hancock, Sonny Dee Bar, Three bars (three times), Jet Deck, Skipper W, and Poco Pine. His grandsire is the famous Brother Heathen. This guy is a super flashy palomino sabino paint and he's gonna get some size on him. His full brother is 16 hh and built like a tank. Chris, is a coming two yr old. He's got a great mind and great looks. He's built real good too. Got great confo... My question is, if you owned a horse with these bloodlines/flashy/good looks/smart/easily trained/etc. would you put 60 days on him and sell him or would you keep him, see how his potential could develop, and then sell him. I'm speaking only in monetary terms... I start colts and I could use the $$$ but I'm tempted to keep him for a bit longer. As it is, I'd be keeping him until around June most likely... What do you guys think? |

Well, I guess it really depends on how much time you would have to put into him. You usually can get a lot more money for a horse that is well started and maybe even has a show or two under his belt. If you have the time and can afford to keep him longer, it might bring you considerably more money than if you sell him now. You also have to consider the market in your area too. With spring coming, there will be a lot more horses on the market to compete with. And by June, there will probably be even more greenbroke horses for sale. It might be easier to sell him now or wait until next year when he will have a lot more time under saddle. Good luck with him, whatever you decide to do! |

Yeah but neither of those count against Foundation registery... Three Bars is considered foundation according to the registery.... Both those horses are at least 7 generations back too... | |

What registry? I'm an officer with one and know both FQHR and WFQHA, and I'm going to go check again, but I think NFQHA too, would not list this horse as 100% Foundation. And the two groups that have the most showing opportunities are FQHR and WFQHA. There is another group that is just a computer and person giving out Foundation Registries but they hold no shows, track no points and really are just another paper org. *Edit update* Yep, checked NFQHA and they go back 11 gens and the only two approved TB tracebacks are through Oklaholma Star and Joe Reed. I am really curious as to which group you are talking about. |

Alright, I just checked on all breed pedigree about the TB part to make sure and the closest TB is five generations back... Other than that, it's all paints and QH's so it looks like he's eligible. What do ya'll think about when I should sell him? |

FQHR, Foundation QUARTER HORSE Registry, is not a "fake" site. They have a large show circuit and keep National Points. But because they are a Quarter Horse registry, they do not accept Paints as they are a different breed. There is a Foundation Paint Horse Registry, but since we don't "do" paints I cant help you there. The "fake" site is FQHA. They have no shows, no points records and accept just about anything with QH papers (the last is JMO, but a very strong opinion of mine) I could look at your horses ped and let you know what her percentage is if you would like. I wasn't looking to put you down, just wanted you to be able to give potential buyers the facts and not have them question you later. *Edit* oops! Just re-read your post and if there are any Paints in there then your horse could not be registered with Foundation Quarter Horse Registries. They are QH bloodlines only with the AQHA approved TB crosses that total under at least 75%. Sorry. |

Just went and checked and the Foundation Paint Horse Registry is still not a going thing. They are working really hard on it, but haven't got it lined out yet. They are basing a lot of their rules and research on the FQH rules, so your foundation percentages will eventually be close to the QH ones, but there are some variables in there. Right now, most of the groups are still in a state by state formation and are trying to get it pulled together for a national group. Friend says it's probably still a couple of years off if everything keeps flowing. You could offer your horse as having a lot of foundation bloodlines in her pedigree and that would be verifiable. |
