| Senior Member+ | Anyone use this emergency stop method?
I was watching Julie Goodight on RFD-TV and she talked and showed how to use the "pulley rein" and I thought it looked a lot safer than a one rein stop. But of course it's only to be used in an emergency because it puts a lot of pressure on the horses mouth.

I've never used it but I'm glad you posted it! I'm a small person without much upper body strength so that might come in handy

I have used this method many of times on my former event horse (he was SUPER strong!) What I like about it is it stops them, but it doesn't unbalance them as much as the 1 rein stop does, so it seems a lot safer to me.

| Senior Member+ | Yeah, and it won't send you both over in a loss of balance.

Yup, I've used it when horses have tried to run away with me. I don't usually brace on their neck, because I don't like to shift my weight forward like that, but essentially the same deal. I like it better than the one-rein stop for a run-away because there is less of a chance of the horse to become unbalanced and fall. I usually only use the one-rein stop if I'm riding a bucker or a rearer and I'm bringing their head around and disengaging their hindquarters. Although when I was taught it, another name was used first. The OH S**T! rein! lol. Then a few years later, it became the pulley rein to me. Last edited by Rowdy_Sandi; 05-11-2009 at 05:12 PM. |
