Thanks Bess!!
The first one was Martha May, she was a 17.1 H jenny, out of a mamoth jack and big TB mare.
The second was Precious May, out of the same mamoth jack (his name was Mayor) and a qh mare. I competed with Precious up to training level in cross country, until the few events we went to were recognized, they don't consider mules to be equine (stupid, huh?) so we could compete in them any more. But when we were going, we were always in the top 5, we even won two events.

I like them, but I would never have one. I know a few people that breed mules, one guy tried talking me into breeding my mare to his jack. I don't think I have the patience required in working with one...

The old saying is once you ride a mule, you'll never want to go back to a horse! They're incredibly smooth! I don't own one, but my grandpa does and they are awesome! They aren't stupid at all! I love my grandpa's mule.. it's a Jenny mule (not sure if that's right.. lol), and she's a bay with a star. Very pretty.

My mom has raised both Mules and donkeys for several years. We have ridden driven and packed on our mules. NOT all mules are as smooth, I own one really rough riding mule. NOT all mules have a great temperment, but mainly the temperment comes from the mother. IN the old days mules had a bad reputation because the worst cull mare were used in mule production. So all the badly conformed bad tempered mares were used to make mules instead of producing more bad horses. Most of the breeders felt that since mules ( generally ) cannot reproduce that it was OK to use the cull mares to make mules for farm work and work in the mines etc. Nowdays, people understand that Quality mules come from Quality mares.

Here are just a few of the mules my mom has bred and raised. The following photos are of my mule and almsot all of her siblings. My mule is the last one of the photos the rest are either her half or full siblings. The one shown outside the barn (third photo) with the lady holding him is a halter winning mule plus he was broke to ride and drive. My mule has also competed in endurance.

I have always wanted a mule. I wonder why you don't see them in jumpers when they can jump so high?

Because it is more natural for a mule to jump form a stand still like in the coon jumping and it is a bit harder to teach them to jump on the run. Plus many riders see them as the "white trash" of the equine world. NO joke, you should hear all the comments I get just because I ride a mule.
