Question Anyone have any tips on keeping twisted tangles from forming in the mane?

Hi all! All of my horses get brushed down (mane and tails too) almost everyday while they eat. But, Sierra's mane still manages to get those twisted tangles in it everytime it rains or snows. I'm getting really tired of that happening......she's the ONLY one who's mane does that, and it literally happens over night! Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on something I can put on her mane before it rains or snow to prevent that from happening? It's a real pain always combing those things out!

If you leave it in loose pasture braids that would stop it. You only need to take it out and re do it once they get ratty...

I didn't even think about braiding it! That's a good idea! Thank You!!! She has such a pretty mane, I didn't want to have to cut it short to keep those tangles from happening!

Do not use "Hair Mositurizer"...left mine worse then before using it! I've always used Laser Sheen and for over 20 years haven't had ONE issue. I know it isn't the most "healthy" option for the hair, but I love it anyway. Mine have always been outdoor horses and the Laser Sheen keeps them slick and clean all year round. After a few uses I only had to use it about every other week.

I love the Equss Survivor, if you can afford it...sigh.

If you do braids, make sure that the top near the crest is SUPER loose. It can pull when they reach down to eat and it will make them itch and rub the hair OFF.

You can do them like this -

This mane is my pride and joy:

she gets horrible wind rats if I don't braid it up and they take forever to untangle. I just braid loosely, in 12-15 different braids, and leave it for as long as I feel like...I think the current braids are going on 2 months. I've never done it like in the link Heather gave you but I think that's really neat and I'll do it that way this week when I take out Jezzie's mane.

I used to work with a mare who got those and boy was it nasty. For her I used the dove human product leave in conditioner/moisturizer stuff and it seemed to work okay. It still got them a couple days later though. I started keeping her mane and tail in loose braids and we didnt have problems after that.

I used to have a gelding I swear every time he passed gas it was enough wind to make those things.

braiding was the only thing that worked.
