I just recently discovered my spotted tobiano TWH is a minimal sabino! I was surprised. He has roaning under his mane on one side of his neck, but I never thought much of it until the area started spreading. So I looked up roaning online, and found out he can't have the roan gene, as he would have to have at least one roan parent, which he doesn't. He's from foundation lines, and Roan Allen is back nine generations, and in researching it, I found out that Roan Allen was in fact a sabino, and many TWHs back then were actually sabinos that were registered as roans.

Anyway, his spots, if you look up close, are not crisp and clean at the edges, but roaned at the edges. The white on his legs is jagged at the tops where it ends, he has white hairs under his jaw, and his blaze goes over his mouth and under his chin, plus the roaning on his neck, all indicating sabino from what I have been reading. I thought it was really interesting. Anyone else here discover their horse is sabino?

Sabino horses are the result of the sabino pinto pattern of white on any base color. The most common expression in Morgans is a sprinkling of roaned hairs or roaned patches, "high white" stockings, a blaze that wraps around the chin, and perhaps a belly spot or two, but sabinos can show more (or even less) white. Sabino horses with the maximum expression of the pattern are nearly all white, but usually retain a small patch of their base color on the ears or along the topline; we don't (yet) have sabinos that are this wildly expressed in Morgans. Since sabinos often have roaning (which may increase as the horse ages), they may be mistaken for true, dark headed roans.

Sabino is currently thought to be due to several different genes. This would account for the variability of expression in sabino horses- why some are roany, some have crisp markings, and still others have jaggedy edged, irregular markings. So, a horse might express just one of the sabino complex genes, a combination, or all of them. Eventually, all of these genes may be located by geneticists and given new names, but for now they are all collectively lumped under the "sabino" label. At this time only one of the sabino complex of genes can be tested for, Sabino1; so just because a horses tests negative for SB1 it does not mean they are not sabino.
