| Senior Member | Any PI's here??
I was just wondering, are there any private investigators on this forum? I'm going to be majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology, and I'm thinking about working with Juvenile Delinquents and becoming a PI. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in the field. Mostly I'm curious about whether you work for a while for someone before getting your license, and what the test is like? Any of you out there?

I had plans for quite some years to become a PI and even took some courses. We had some PI training when I went through my bodyguard course and I got interested. Depending on what state you live in some require Apprenticeships under a licensed PI. Here in CA they do, it used to be for three years. Not sure what it is currently. In WA you could pretty much take the test and hang out your license. (at least you used to be able to) Your best bet is to research PI's in your area and call to ask for information. They could tell you what is required for your area. I ended up dropping all my Criminology and Psych classes (and I was in the top two percent) when my Mom got sick and I had to take care of her until she passed away and then I had to do the same with my Dad. I'm now 44 with two girls to take care of and honestly though I would love to go complete everything I just don't see it happening anytime soon . . . if ever. But good luck and I hope you go through with everything! Penelle

Thanks Kamara, hope you get to finish someday if you still want to I just found OH's requirements. They say that for "some classes" of security and investigator licenses, they require you to work in that environment for two years prior to taking the test, but they don't say which classes. So, I'll have to email them eventually. I've already scoped out what PI around here I want to work for as a secretary or whatever. There's none out here in "hickville" but I live only 35min. from Columbus, and there's plenty there Anyone else?

You might want to ask what working in the environment means? Usually apprenticeships mean you have to work in the field doing some of the actual work you would eventually be doing when you get your license. So you would essentially be a junior PI until you got your requirements fulfilled and received your license. On the other hand working as a secretary would be a great way to see if you are serious about pursuing it as a career. You could observe what goes on in the job without having to do the rest and then make the decision. Penelle
