Most people use barrels, or cones. Natural objects can also be used like landscaping (just check out the obstacle first and ask if it is okay to jump the persons hedge or whatever. I built my own cavalettis, which I adore. They are 2x4 x's inside of 2x6 boxes (so no one gets stabbed or something). I made 2 pair and bought some pvc pipes (but small logs can be used. You make them as big as you want and stack them as well. They were really easy to make and strong! (my pony made a habbit of knocking them over and standing on them!) I love to jump, so I needed something that I could have for a long time and was safe for the animals. I do cross country, but stadium is more of what I built them for! I bought extra pvc as trot poles. |

Tires work well, as long as they are secured so that the horse can't get a leg stuck in them or something. We had a tire jump on our cross-country course, and it was a row of tires lined up next to each other so it was solid....I can't describe it without a picture, which I just might have on my other computer. P.S. Where in Oregon are you? That's where I'm from, in fact that jump I mentioned is in Oregon!

There was a thread a while back about making jumps, I would see if you can find it.

Some jumps we used to have in our pasture... Barrels, you can lay two side by side and then one across the top in the middle like a triangle or for more height stand four of them up side by side. Picnic table then advance to picnic table with the benches An old couch Hay bales are always good

The thread that SHotgun provided for you is excellent. Just remember, to NOT put anything under the jump that may cause an injury. Do not put chairs, tables, or anything crazy under there. It is an accident waiting to happen. You can get some wooden boxes and fill them with fake flowers. You can get cones for underneath too. Just make sure that the stuff that you make the jump out of is not dangerous if a hoof accidentally hits it. When you are done with the project, send us pics! |

i agree with shotgun and smitty and don't put anything heavy like metal, log or strong wood as a bar to jump over you'll injure your horse if she makes a mistake, so put something light like a skinny pipe,

I used plastic barrels, cut length wise, they make a great roll top, then use 2 upright for the standards, and put a pole across for height....Cathy
