| Senior Member | Another - what is this saddle worth?
My sister called and said there were some saddles for sale around the corner at a garage sale! I went to look and this is a 16" saddle. The guy is going to get me the name of the maker. It has a fiberglass tree...looks like either regular or semi QH bars. The people were from Missouri and had a horse trail company until wife got hurt and could not longer ride. They moved here but he is going to Afghanistan as a contractor. Has nice back girths...a little thread is loose on the back of the saddle. Rawhide stirrups - tops are coming loose somewhat - not that concerned over stirrups. He offered to let me take it to try on Red...whatcha think? He wants $400 for it - said it was $1200 new a few years ago. Suede seat. |

I like it. I think it would definitely be worth a trial run. As long as there are no major repairs needed, 400 looks like a good price for it.

Fiberglass trees are bad, and usually sign of a poorly made Asian saddle. Perhaps it has a Ralide tree? Ralide trees are usually yellow or off-white in color and solid (not hollow like fiberglass).

It probably was a Ralide. It did have a saddle tag stating it was made in the USA. The leather was pretty nice! He had some great pads and a child's Hereford show saddle. I decided against it awhile ago due to the tree being fiberglass or whatever it was...not a rawhide covered tree! I called my horse buddy here and asked for her opinion. Her opinion was don't! |

Ralide is a good tree material. Most of my saddles are Ralide. Fiberglass is bad, as is hide covered soft wood (pine). Both will warp and crack over time.
