Those numbers seem really high for that long after collection. Normal motility is over 65%. AI's not harder than Live Cover, it's SHIPPING that's harder. Most good farms won't do anything but AI for the sake of their stallion and mares not getting hurt unless a stallion's very good at his live cover!

Oh, and progressive means swimming full speed a head, not just dancing around on the microscope
LMAO!!!!! True! Your soo right!!! One nite of semen can do wonders!!!!!! To funny

The breeder sent 2 bags, of semen, my vet tested a sample from both bags...... I really hope he was right on about 70% + He said it was good semen. The breeder said Afires Vision has extremely strong semen that ships very well, and is still affective at 72hours........ Hmmm mabe the breeder wasnt just saying it mabe its really true!!!

Ok my vet also said the little guys were swimming ahead and back and forth!! haha. They better not have been dancing LOL they have a BIG job to do!!!!!

My vet also said the semen looked a little diluted, he said most farms put a preservative in so the semen stays good longer and an anitbiotic in it. We are not sure if they put that in, they never said they did, but my vet did say it look diluted.........

I have a question.... How long after they have the semen in them do they need to ovulate?? If they dont ovulate for 24-48hours is that to late?? How can you tell if they have ovulated? Do I just check and see if she is still in heat????

I am glad its over for a couple weeks at least............

Thanks for your help!!!!! I am so clueless about AI, but I am learning lots!!! I will be a pro soon LOL

Mtroika, I sure hope she takes! FedEx does suck, especially when it's crossing the border!!! I ordered a saddle and leathers from dover in the south, shipping was supposed to be 3 days, for $200. It took one week to get here and cost $900 in shipping!! We were getting the saddle cheaper, until then! It was a big deal too because I couldn't even ride in my other saddle (I was bareback for a few weeks) and I had a show that ******** weekend!
Hehehehehe I laughed about that to LOL!!!!!!!!!

Wow I CANNOT belive you were told $200 then it costed $900!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG did you have to pay it???????? That is just insane!!! Fed Ex is a real pain!!!

From what I know, Arabs are always strong shippers (as a whole). The fact that he'll have swimmers alive at 72 hours means two things: 1. Good genetics behind the stallion and 2. The tech that extended the semen knows what they're doing and everything was prepared to a tee!

Ok my vet also said the little guys were swimming ahead and back and forth!! haha. They better not have been dancing LOL they have a BIG job to do!!!!! As long as there was a Conga line... you'll be fine! LOL

My vet also said the semen looked a little diluted, he said most farms put a preservative in so the semen stays good longer and an anitbiotic in it. We are not sure if they put that in, they never said they did, but my vet did say it look diluted......... Actually all semen has to be extended to be shipped. The fluid that the little guys are swimming in can actually kill them. The extender is basically like a fuel pack for them giving the sperm something to snack on while in transit and also room for them to expel waste. Think of it like this... in Los Angeles Rush hour, cars are bumper to bumper... same with sperm in seminal fluid. When you add the proper amount of extender, it's like going for a drive in the country w/no traffic. All stallion managers typically use an antibiotic in their extenders (maybe not if it's just on farm and put in the mare right away) but it's all dependant on the stallion and what he may need. We've tried INRA 96 on our stallion two years in a row. Doesn't work for **** with him. With his motility over 80% all the time, the Universal extenders have too much sugar (think about kids with too much sugar) and would "spin out of control" with excitement... so we use Kenney (or Max Semen) and then you have several "normal" antibiotics like Ticarcillin or Amikacin & K-Penn.

I have a question.... How long after they have the semen in them do they need to ovulate?? If they dont ovulate for 24-48hours is that to late?? How can you tell if they have ovulated? Do I just check and see if she is still in heat???? It depends on the semen again, if it's extended properly, it can last longer in the "incubator" (uterus). You normally try and get it in there right before they ovulate. The only way to know if she ovulated is an Ultra Sound again.

Welcome. No, that's not always meaningful that she's in heat still. Wish it was though!

Yay

YAY! It wasnt just me going crazy :S

I am breeding 2 of my mares this year, and both were given thier shots on friday and were brought to the clinic on Tuesday. We ordered semen for both on wednesday.. LUCKILY got to drive to bellingham to pick it up and drive it home.. (avoided customs holds that way) well.. got there. only one stallions shipment.. Iw as in bellingham, no phone and just confused. drove thehour home, called, and her truck broke down on route to the vets!

Of course, it was the semen for the mare mid estrous, not the early estrous one :S So it arrived this AM, and she was inseminated shortly after, and my paint amre was inseminated for the second time today.. PHEW. WHAT A WORKOUT

Driving like a maniac, calling everyone, just insane. Boarding the mares at the vet etc just an expensive GRRRR

You are soooo not the only one!!!! hahaha! And I see were both from BC

LMAO That was me!!! I was calling Fed-Ex and the breeders! Then Fed-Ex and the airlines so I could get this darn stuff flown here, I didnt want to have to drive all way to Vancouver to get it.........

And ya I know about the money factor eeeeeek after 3 ultrasounds, AI, shots, after hours vet calls etc..... I think the stress is the worst though!!!

Gosh what else could have gone wrong hey??? LOL

At least my semen went through customs without stopping...... That was the only happy spot about it all haha
