Unhappy ALWAYS wear shoes when riding bike!

Yesterday we were at a family members house, and the kids were riding bike around the block. My sister was riding in front of someones drive way, and hurried up to get through so that the person wouldn't have to wait much longer, she hit a bump on the side walks, and her foot sliped into the pedel of her bike, she fell and cut her toe VERY bad.
We rushed her to the hospitl and had her taken alook at. Out of the 8 cm around her toe (I think that is what they said) 6 of them were cut (which means it was almost all the way around the toe). She came very close to having surgery, but only ended up with 12 stiches (look at your big toe and amagine 12 stiches going almost all the way around) She was in the ER for almost 4 hours...It took very long
Just a reminder on how we should ALWAYS be save.

Ouch. I've heard pretty nasty stories too. Our old neighbor said his brother was riding a bike with no shoes on and his foot got caught in the spokes and the tips of four of his toes were chopped off. Ew.

Glad your sister is alright though!

OUCH!!! That sounds bad! I hope she heals soon and wears shoes from now on!

I hurt my leg really bad on a bike when I was a kid. I was wearing shorts and riding my mom's bike. You know where the chain goes around the spikes? I leaned the bike up against my leg to talk to someone and they went into my leg! I had to walk all the way home, luckily it was only a 5 minute walk... I had blood running all the way down my leg, my sock and shoe was soaked in it. I refused to let my mom take me to the hospital (seem to do that a lot), so she patched it up as best she could. I still have the scars, the biggest is about a 1/2 inch circle and there are two more, all on the side of my leg below my knee. I never rode a bike after that, until a year ago and that was only for a minute. I can't say how I watched and made sure those spikes stayed away from my leg!

Oh, I feel for her. I too learned to always wear shoes the hard way.
I was riding my bike with a friend, he swerved into me with his bike and I lost my balance and my foot got caught in the spokes (to this day I don't know how that happened) and I ripped off all of the skin from the bottom of my foot, I had to be on crutches for almost a month, it was awful.
