Yes, I agree with HJ - he looks really sharp!

So update, we tried the tranq again, and with 1.5ccs, he had some headshaking but nothing as bad as before - maybe the tranq we used last time was defective or something? I'm not sure. Anyway, his mane is totally pulled and it looks nice!

I'm glad you got it done! Now, just keep on top of it! So much easier to just do a wee bit every few weeks than having to do a whole lot all at once. Who knows, maybe he'll at least learn to tolerate it.

I have an appendix mare that absolutely hates her mane pulled I mean she will rear and strike out at you the whole nine yards! If you don't feel like pulling his mane and putting up w/ it I use clipper blades by themselves not with the clippers.... Just take the blades and trim the bottom few inches.

I had never been exposed to this until i started at my new barn.. but clipper blades are the BEST!! I don't know if you have tried them are not but they are amazing! They don't really work for thinning the mane but they work awesome for shortening it. We have a boarder who cuts her horses mane and it looks HORRIBLE! I would try a clipper blade. Have you ever tried pulling just a little bit of his mane a day? I know it woudl take forever, but one of our horses has a thick mane and we just take a little section per day.. even if its only one piece. and we use the clipper blade to shorten it. Also u could try putting it in loose braids to train it to one side if it stands up on end... although our one horse no matter what we do it stands up on end... but a strong hair gel helps for show days!

Try using your thinning knife sideways through the mane. You can thin it out a lot that way without actually pulling it. My mare has a terribly full mane that sticks straight up and/or to the left and/or forward (never to the right!) and hates pulling. She will tolerate this, and I get it thin enough to braid. Cutting it makes braiding much harder because the ends are not as nice to pull through when they're squared off.

So, anything else I could do? Or any way for me to work past his little "temper tantrums"? He's fine with brushing, grabbing, yanking, etc, but will not allow for mane pulling (he's a little bit of a weird horse ).

Thanks in advance!

They have those "Humane Mane Pullers" that when you wrap it around, right before you pull you press the button and it cuts rather than pulls...no pain.

I absolutely swear by solo combs:

My horse HATES pulling which is why I bought it (she will try to smash me into walls, fences, and head butt me) the first couple of times she was a little wary and shook her head because she thought I was going to pull the hairs, as soon as she realized I wasn't she was fine and has been since. Obviously it doesn't thin so you do get a thicker result but I find it looks the same as if I had pulled it otherwise - and you don't get the short hairs that are growing poking up either because you have not pulled anything out.

Basically you use it like a pulling comb, but rather than pulling the hairs out you just push the button and it cuts it.
