lol, a lot of horse people refer to chestnut as the darker shaded sorrel horses, so the ones who are darker and more brown looking are what some people call "chestnuts". The lighter, more red looking ones are called "sorrels". Its kinda like people who call all foals, colts, technically speaking they can be "wrong" but in the horse world there are lots of "exceptions".

look the same to me, we call them chestnuts here i've never heard anyone say sorrel in aust..

Sorrel is definitely a western American thing. I heard it (and "colt") mostly in Texas, but I hear it sometimes here in backwoods Kentucky.

I've heard both and any red horse to me is a chestnut. Flaxen, liver or otherwise.

F gene is what causes the lighter color in mane/tail in chesnuts. White gene will mask chesnut shade. Sorry had to clarify my sentence alittle more in detail.

They look the same. But genetically speaking their are ways to determine the breakdown of the colors by eye and scientifically. It's very interesting. And registering is another way to associations. Not that is all agreeable.
