Is there a difference between alfalfa cubes vs. alfalfa pellets when feeding as a "grain". ...

    Question Alfalfa Pellets vs. Alfalfa Cubes

    Is there a difference between alfalfa cubes vs. alfalfa pellets when feeding as a "grain". I've read lots about alfalfa pellets helping with weight gain, along with beet pulp, rice bran, and b.o.s.s. Yet I cannot find the pellets in my area, just cubes.

    I think it depends on the store.

    One store in town only carries the cubes. A guy outside of town carries both pellets and cubes.

    no, not really.

    the pellet is just in "smaller pieces" and probably a tad bit of molassas to stick it together in a pellet form.

    Cubes is dehydrated...same as pellets....

    You still feed by weight. Just pellets will "seem less amount" than the cubes due to pure size and density.

    I could see the "long stem" part being less in the pellets vs the cubes....

    meaning some of the stuff that usually doesn't get broken down until the hind gut may get broken down in the stomach and small intestine.

    If forage is a concern - ie the horse can't eat hay or grass very well - then you want to go with cubes because yes, the fiber is long enough to be a decent substitute for hay/grass. The fiber is much too short in pellets to make that difference.

    But if forage isn't a concern, you're just looking for concentrated calories, then it doesn't matter whether you use cubes or pellets. I far prefer pellets in this situation because 50lb of pellets takes up less room to store than 50lb of cubes.

    If you wet the cubes, they pretty much pulverize. I have been doing that, and was kinda shocked, as they look like they have more fiber than the pellets, which look more like powder pressed in there, but when I wet the cubes, they actually have shorter fibers than the beat pulp pellets.

    I think nutritionally, the pellets and cubes are the same per pound, but you probably do get more fiber in the cubes. If you feed cubes dry too, i would think it would take them longer to eat than the pellets and be more satisfying... kind of like mashed potatoes vs baked potatoes....

    I was reading one tag that said it had animal fat in it to keep it formed..(cant remember the technical term for that.....)

    Ok, from what I understand, molasses or animal fat can be used as a *binder* (word I couldnt remember earlier...duh). What KIND of animal fat is actually used? Anyone know??
