Most all horses already HAVE owners that took on the responsibility of a humane life and death when they took ownership.
There is a 30 day withdrawal period for many of the medications that we use on our horses (bute has no withdrawal period and cannot be administered to "food animals")

Actually the article states there were 'improvements" however 1500 horses on three acres with mares, foals and stallions running together is crazy....
Yes, horses are transported across the borders now - with slaughter legal - however, when the inhumane horse slaughter system is illegal, there will be very few.

You still don't think it will happen? Trust me it will. LOTS. And it'll mean longer, harder, hauls for those horses until they reach the border. Drugs are illegal, and you don't think they are still brought into and out of America?

Those horses "run together" for about half a day, 72 hours at the most.

The "other purposes" clause is what worries people. This can and WILL be interpreted as anything PETA wants as soon as they get this bill passed. The world isnt perfect, slaughter is a less than perfect answer to the problems faced by the horses in the US, UK and other countries, however right now it is the ONLY feasible answer. It will take many many years, probably many, many generations before people can be stopped over-producing and slaughter will cease to be a necessary evil. Its sad but its also fact. Time for some people to wake up and smell the coffee.
Wasting time lobbying for the abolition of slaughter accomplishes NOTHING for animal welfare. Instead why not direct all your energies into improving conditions for animals, raising money for charities etc. (well any charity that is animal welfare NOT animal rights, if you are unsure as to how to tell te difference PM me and i will give you some pointers) its a far better use of time to improve situations than to get rid of practical solutions and make the whole mess a whole lot worse.

.................................................. ............The pro-slaughter people always try to link us anti- slaughter people to PETA. It is their way of trying to invalidate our stance. They push this parlor trick propaganda to make us appear as zealots,or members of crazy, terrorist organizations. It is simply a flat out inaccuracy and untruth.I personally have met the finest people who are anti-slaughter. They include Senators ,lawyers, doctors, nurses, actors,,writers, congressme n,governors and just plain old grannies and grandpas who donate incessant hours of service to stop this hiddeous wrong doing to horses.Since I have started to actively pursue the PASSAGE OF HR 857, I have personally been approached by numerous, sleazy, hateful ,rude, men who have told me . 1. woman, go back to the kitchen as this is a man's decision to make 2.been asked if I'm a vegetarian too many times to count, 3. called names too nasty to write on this board 4.had numerous hang up phone calls in the middle of the night(and I have caller ID). I am logging each one down, dates, time.ect BTW 5. I have had personal incidents from pro-slaughter and (killer buyer)folks in which THEY have been frighteningly , verbally violent and try with intimidation tactics to make me stop talking about this subject. They approached me with the violence,,,I did not return the same favor. I live just a few hours down the road from Beltex on I-20. Most of us would rather NOT have to deal with such nastiness but the abuse of horses makes us put ourselves out there on a minute to minute basis. We are committed !!!! charmedlife

Whats up with all these PETA fans invading our forum??

I am ALL FOR horse slaughter! Until people quit breeding their backyard stallion to their backyard mare we need the horse slaughter to keep our industry going and to prevent those unwanted backyard horses from starving. I know it's soo sad and yaddayaddayadda..... It's also life! Cows are born to be meat - thats why most people breed them. I have purchased several horses on their way to slaughter (that I knew had potential and that had great conformation) and turned them into wonderful horses and got them amazing lifelong homes. But I don't want a 23 year old sickle hocked, toed in, sway backed mare! I have no use for one and no one else does either - therefore she ends up at a slaughter house and is humanly put down and her body is put to good use!

The slaughter system perpetuates irresponsible breeding as they can always dump them in the slaughter system. Without the slaughter system, those that continue to breed and cannot sell at the local auction will have to learn what a marketable horse is, they will either have to keep them longer or humanely euthanize them. If they have to humanely euthanize their own horses, they may have to learn how to market a horse and not breed so many the next year. Basic supply and demand principles.

The report that Temple Grandin did on Transportation showed the average age of horses in the slaughter system to be 11 years old.

I am not a member of any organization. The following is a partial list of those supporting HR 857

The real problem is the way this bill is written. They need to take out a lot of clauses (such as the other purposes clause which PETA IS behind) before the bill can be considered as a workable piece of legislation. (in fact the whole transport clause needs to be removed in its entireity)
Am i right in thinking slaughter would still occur for animal-feed under this bill?

The three foreign owned U.S. horse slaughter facilites would not exist without shipping overseas for human consumption. PETA had nothing to do with the creation of HR857.

The thing I meant by getting out of hand is that we've had threads closed on this topic and there have been an influx of them all at once. Its only a matter of time (just in my opinion) before this thread goes the same way.
