| Full Member | Ah, the joys of winter grooming!
cold days, nice frozen buckets, NO HEAT, as much time to groom as in the summer....what are you huy's tips andd tricks for winter grooming? Mine are something similar to (keep in mind, I have no heated water or clipped ponies): I NOW use waterless shampoo (my mom just bought some ^^) for special occasions. Shedding blades for mud monsters. Lots of brushing. Hoof care [especially] (I *love* (not) picking out packed snow from their hooves! *gags*) Curries curries curries! Keep the horse indoors (well, I ride lesson ponies, so I can't control that, but you get the point.) Anyone else want to add to that? |

LOL Keep those sheets on! hahahaa I swear my guys can find mud in the driest of dry pastures! Vacuums work wonders too. Of course, one of my TBs is petrified of anything nosey - clippers, vacuums, etc. We're working on it, but I think he has it stuck in his mind that noisey things will eat him. LOL hahahahaa Those grooming stones work wonders on getting that nasty mud off too. I HATE when the mud gets clumped in their mane...grrrr It's SO hard to get out, so I'll just use a stiffer mud brush on their manes and brush every way I can, then go back with a comb and coconut oil to get it cleaned up.

Yes, keep the sheets on as much as possible. If you can catch the wet mud or dirt, try to get it off asap. I used a warm wet towel to get nasty dirt off.

Keep the blanketed when they're outside in the pasture and try to groom as much as possible. CURRY, CURRY. CURRY!!!!! Probably the best thing that you can do during winter. Curry, dandy brush, body brush, repeat. You usually don't need to repeat, only when they haven't been groomed in a while. You may want to brush their mane each time and rebraid (if you do braid at all) and put the tail up. When you ride, I would suggest putting on a schooling pad and a fitted pad (if you ride English) to keep them warm Happy winter grooming! :P |

i know the pains of riding lesson horsies :P the horses at my barn are ALWAYS kept out in a paddock rain or shine (well i live in sunny california so it doesnt get too bad down here) but its soooooooooooooooooooo annoying in the winter when the horsies decide to take a nice big roll in the mud... its the WHITE ones that decide to this more often than not!!! >:[ |
