Advice for teaching a mini to jump in hand?

So i have a 3 year old mini, Rio. And I would really like to show him in hand next year at a couple local shows, we've done some training with him, he lunges and has shown a lot of early potential over fences. But he wont go over a fence unless the person leading him goes over with him lol. If I try to run past the jump and have him go over he just follows me around it, lol. So any advice would be great! Here are some pics of him going over some fences, the highest is let at 1.9ft (it looks huge cause hes so tiny, lol)

Is there anyway to make a chute to send him through before the fence?

I used to jump a mini/shetland cross and a lunge whip really helped me out. I could point it at her shoulder to help push her back where I wanted and snap it a little behind her to get her to jump. So if you can't make a chute, you might try a lunge whip or something.

In my opinion, that's way too high to be jumping a 3 year old mini. You should be going very lightly on the jumping at his age in general. 2' is what a lot of normal sized horses are doing as 3 year olds.

But back to your question, you can either use a cross rail to help guide him to the center of the fence, or you can prop a rail on the outside of the jump to help guide him from running out.
