Thumbs down Accidents happen

Well, I'll start out telling you how I remember it. I had Johanna over, we were working on a school project and I took her into the pasture to meet the horses. We went out back, and when we went back, supposedly one of us left the gate open. So, (Roxanne was out.) Roxanne got back to Dudly (STUD) and was probably had.
I DID NOT WANT A FOAL. He's a mutt, and Roxane is still in training.
But now, (worst possible) she could be pregnant.

Any advice? Is equine abortion available? Is it costly?
I don't know what to do.I never wanted it to happen.

I'm not sure of cost, but I know there are ways to terminate equine pregnancies. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to end it and safer for the mare as I understand it.

I believe there are injections, and I know you can also pinch the embryo. If you really want to do that, I would suggest getting a vet out there soon so you can determine if she is in foal. I think the injection can be given even if they don't think she is, just to make sure?

Equine Repro or Blistering Winds would probably be the best ones to ask about that. I'm trying to remember what I've read and learned, but its late so my brain isn't operating at full capacity.

equine abortion?? well i'm sure there is something you can do about it, i imagine half the breeding programs out there dont always want a certain horse to bred so if it happens i think maybe they do use some kind of a horse "abortion" but i am not sure? if i were you i would get a vet out and ask him about it, i dont think they can tell for a few months though?? but atleast you can ask about horse abortion? best of luck and hope your horse isnt' preg.

There is an injection you can give that'll make the mare come into season again and thus abort the embryo. My trainer had to do that with a mare once who got bred on accident by her own sire (yeah, we REALLY didn't want that foal). So it is possible.

Thanks. The vets around here say to wait 45 days then to get the mare ultrasounded. Does anyone know how much the injections cost?

I can't really remember, exactly, but it is not that expensive.

I think it runs 25-30 for the shot "AT MOST"

but yes, you can have it done.

Also, its too early for me to look it up, but I believe at day 60, you can ultrasound and if an embryo is seen, they can ....well, for a lack of words...."POP" it.

Give the mare a shot of prostaglandin (Lutalyse, Prostin, Prostamate) about a week after she goes out of season. It must be given no earlier than 5 days post ovulation. It's safe, easy and CHEAP!! Do NOT wait until 45 days. There is absolutely NO reason to have her pregnancy checked...it's an additional, unnecessary expense. When giving the prostaglandin, be sure to give the micro-dose (1/10th the usualy lutenizing dose two days in a row) to avoid the side effects normally associated with the use of prostaglandin (cramping, sweating, etc.).

For best results, use the above protocol before 30 days post breeding.

Good luck!
