We gave that filly one that my 9 month old colt got. Just a quick shot and call it done. I was wondering why studly the mutt still has his fuzzies?

Actually, you can pop them any time after they can be viewed via ultrasound. I've reduced twins as small as 12 days, although that's early for most to attempt. You want to try and reduce it prior to 32 days as after that, the endometrial cups have begun to form and there is the distinct possibility that the mare will not cycle for the rest of the season. I would truly not like to attempt to "pop" a 60 day pregnancy. It's a couple inches long at that stage of the game and would be extremely difficult to reduce mannually.

Hope that helps!

you need another vet. You can ultrasound at 16 days past last breeding and if she is pregnant you can have your vet give you your options then. My mare showed pregnant with twins at 16 days and at 20, it showed she was absorbing one. My vet told me that we would have tried to pinch one off at that time if they were both showing viable or if I chose because they were so close together,we could give her a shot to abort and start over. I don't know how much the shot is but my ultrasound was 80.00. Good luck

When I bred my mare she had twins the first time around, so my vet tried to pinch one of the embryo's off. It was already after 30 days (I've heard it's difficult to do much later than that) and he got both. He said it was because they were so close together. A lot of times in twin pregnancies I guess if they pinch one off earlier they have more of a chance to save one.

I don't remember how much it was, but I don't think it was costly at all. And if you think about it... instead of feeding a pregnant mare for 11 months, all the vet bills to check the pregnancy, and feeding and caring for the foal until it can be sold (that's if it can be sold)... It's much cheaper to just do the procedure now.

The reason why Dudley still had his 'tennis balls' is because my sister wanted to wait until it was warmer. (She had an entire WEEK to get it done.)
Then the vet wanted too much money for it. ($140 How much is that? They had $8,000!)

IF they had gotten him GELDED, this wouldn't have happened! I plan on (If we want the foal.) sending half of any foaling fees (Vet cost.) to them.
Why I called Dudley a mutt:
They don't know what breed he is.

That's the thing though. If I let her have it and sell it, it won't get much money, not enough to pay even some of the vet bills. (It would be an Arab X ???) Roxanne is in training, and I do not want to have to start all over. AND I think there are already too many horses out there, Roxanne having one would just add to the problem.
I'm going to call a vet and ask them if they do abortions, and how they do them. Oh, and about the cost.

If the OP does not want this foal (and under the circumstances, there is absolutely no redeeming reason to allow the pregnancy to go to term) there is NO reason to go through the additional expense and time of ultrasounding. Prostaglandin will lyse the corpus luteum (CL) which is essential for pregnancy maintenance. In research where prostaglandin was given to mares prior to 23 days gestation, it resulted in 100% pregnancy loss. Indeed, if she contacts her veterinarian and explains why she wants the shot, my guess is that the veterinarian will more than likely just prescribe the shot and allow her to give it herself, thereby saving a vet call, as well. Why would anyone wish to verify whether or not there is a pregnancy if the only reason to do so is to terminate it?

Hope that helps!
