Abandonment Epidemic

This is an old article from last year but I doubt it's any better now:

Yes, it makes you wonder what the folks that are dead set against slaughter are doing to help all of these abandoned and starving horses. I wonder if they have taken in several hundred or are sending thousands of dollars to help support the horses that are beyond help.

How RUDE!!! I can promise you that those of us who are "dead set against slaughter", are doing more than someone like you who would rather kill them than help them.

Please, I have seen some horses around here that are so skinny and starving, and the people are so desperate for money they wont even give them to a good home, everyone is holding out for that last buck, so I ask you this? , is it better to let them starve, (I see them starving in the farms all around me), or is it better to take them to auction?
(It is funny how for once, the Amish horses look better then the pets-in the fields!)
And NO the Humane Society wont do anything, especially now, since some think GRASS is a exceptable food source!
(to bad the grass is so short in most cases, the horses are not getting adiquet amounts!)

I think the whole supply/demand thing is out of wack. At the farm where I board, they didn't breed any of their broodmares this year because of this - and that's responsible. I think we need less stallions & broodmares and more really nice geldings and mares.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion regarding proper management of livestock. Please don't take things personal.

I agree. People get animals for all the wrong reasons. They think they're cute, cuddly don't realize the responsibility that actually goes into owning one. In this day in age it's a novelty to own, lease,or co-board a horse. I personally think the public needs to be more educated.

I agree! I am having my stud cut this year. The market is horrible, there are several horses out there that are starving and do need attention. However, people can't afford to do so. Horses are getting turned loose in the parks, and heck even at the auction barns. You can't afford to put them to sleep...no slaughter what other option do you have?? The local rescues are full! Stormy you can't take them all! Maybe instead of fighting to close the slaughter houses people should have faught for the treatment of the horses in transport to them. That is just my opinion.

Hey Stormyheart, you don't even know me, how can you be so sure that I haven't helped ones that are salvagable? I completely understand saving horses that will have a useful, productive life with a human partner. Horse that are wracked with pain, legs that will no longer carry them comfortably, and need expensive care to simply walk around( if possiable) in a pasture no bigger than someones 'city' yard is insane. When poor horses die, what do you do with them? Can we ship them to you at your horse cemetary? It costs nearly a thousand dollars here to have a dead horse disposed of. Many states will not allow you to bury them on your property. What's the answer?
