However, we do need to come up with a solution soon, or our parks and back roads will be full of horses that no one wants.... Hopefully, without anger, we can get something moving ... I'd rather the horses didn't suffer while we all argued back and forth over treatment. This could easily mushroom into major restrictions on horse ownership.... or more taxes on horse owners to assisst states in caring for unwanted/abandoned animals....ect.

You haven't been in this battle very long have you? I can pretty much tell by your statements above. IF....you think you can get laws passed, AND enforced, without any loopholes....have at it!!! You will gain much more resistance to that than we anti's get from the pro's on slaughter. Simply because it will take a LOT of money to acheive and enforce!!! Even then....what to do with the horses confiscated will become an expense. Who's gonna pay for all this?

Say what??? This is the OP's 2nd post ever on HGS and they said nothing about being for or against slaughter. And their first post had NOTHING to do with horses. I think you have your wires crossed.

No wires crossed Cindy. Just read too fast, is all. You are right....my apologies to the OP. I was referring to "mxt?????, something or other".

Are you always in the habit of "hit and runs"? You know you don't have to post, log off to read responses, and then log back in when you want to post again, don't ya?

I do when I'm on my blackberry and I can't tie the phone up between calls for long. I hop on and hop off as I can. Some of us don't play games like others imagine.

Wasn't fretting cindy....where did you get that from? I made an observation, and asked you about it. Who's conspiring????

Sorry if you took it wrong. I mean't no harm by it.....I was curious as to why you kept logging off and back on to respond. Now I know. Sorry for asking.

Yes Stormy, I've had a horse die on my property, and yes, according to county law, they are supposed to be disposed of either through a rendering works or, would you believe, hauled to a county land fill. I couldn't do either. The horse is illegally buried on my property.
You and I taking in one horse at a time will never solve this problem and it is only getting worse. I've taken in older horses, saved them from distruction, if you will. Found excellent homes for them as wonderful teaching aids for children. Yes, they moved on to productive, useful lives where they will live out their senior years, being useful to someone. I've had a couple that were neither useful to me or themselves as they were beyond bringing back from the brink of insane. Yes, I sold them to buyers that would relieve them from their miserable lives.
I have a mare now, that when she is healthy again, she will be my granddaughters first horse. Between hip problems, that is fixable with the proper care, and a bit of artheritis, she will make a great friend to her. She is already 'teaching' her about grooming and feeding. Yes, the horse is productive. If she were not, she wouldn't be here.
If you were riding in a park and came across 5 loose horses, what would you do? Take them home somehow? Could you afford to feed those 5 extras that you have no hope of training? Would you take them to a rescue, if there is one in your area? Would you leave them be and hope they make it on there own?
I have a friend that woke up one morning to find 'extra' horses in her pasture. Didn't know how they got there, didn't know who put them there and already had 6 of her own to care for. Would expect those sort of things to overlooked. Have them just say,'Oh well, just more mouths to feed'. They live in a remote area and people abandon dogs, cats, and many other critters along their road in the middle of the night.
I'm sure there's some kind of a solution. Many have been suggested but untill something is implimented for people that can no longer care for their animals, abandonment and slaughter will exist, even if many of us don't like it.

If memory serves, this isn't the first discussion that you haven't answered any of my questions, Stormyheart. I'm sure if you have solutions to all these problems, we would all like to hear them. Purhaps we could all form a group to go before the 'powers that be' and tell them your solution to the horse problem in this country. Purhaps introduce a bill that says you have to have a particular annual income, certain number of acers, before you can own a horse. Maybe a certain level of education or certain zoning. We could set age limits on ownership, afterall, anyone can own a horse. 1 horse per person that meet the requirements and each horse has to have a certain number of acers. Perhaps, no breeding allowed for a particular number of years and if your caught, you go to jail?
Yes, you yell the loudest, but you give no solutions. You can stand at the top of a mountain and beat your breast screaming 'no slaughter', but it will fall on deaf ears untill there viable solutions.

Is that suppose to shut me up??? Come on now....you can do better than that. Yes.....I mean't "someone like you"!!!!!!!!!
The mod who has agreed to monitor these slaughter threads does not have the time to deal with the personal "Someone like you" comments. Make it personal and the member will be removed from the discussion.

I have seen no one slander the anti side in this thread. We do not need to play that card unless it is valid.

Simplest way I can think of to answer ALL of your questions is....why would you think someone else should be responsible for the euthanasia and disposal of YOUR animals? (Not YOU specifically....YOU being a general term here.)

This is what I don't understand......people go out and get animals for whatever reason. They have no problem spending a whole lot of money getting that animal, and spending a whole lot of money taking care of it for however long they have it. But, as soon as they are done with it, suddenly everyone complains about the money they will have to spend to euthanise and dispose of it.

You cannot possibly blame the closing of slaughter on horses being abandoned. Because slaughter is still an option.....takes a little more effort to achieve now, but none the less, is still an option.

Slaughter is NOT an abandonment/neglect answer. IF you took ALL the abandonment and neglect cases.....put them together, and slaughtered ALL of them.....it STILL would NOT be enough horses to make slaughter profitable, and worthy of opening up the plants in the states here again.

Slaughter was NEVER mean't to be a place to take abandoned or abused or neglected horses!!!! It is a money driven business, just like any other business. It has NOTHING to do with putting suffering animals out of their misery. THAT is not a slaughter house's method of operation. THAT is the owners responsibility....not a slaughter houses's responsibility!

Why don't people understand that?
