Because of my horse passions, the thought does not appeal to me and it is my personal belief (I can feel another poll coming) that the vast majority of pro slaughter people are more interested in the base value of horses than seeing horse burger in the butcher shop.

Only a complete nutter would believe pro slaughter people are trying to phase out the beef industry. That is just crazy talk.
Oh, WOW!!! You've missed some threads then. There's been plenty of them, and the ones who promote horsemeat were even posting recipes for it, and telling how it tastes, ect......

To listen to a lot of them, they have either tried it and liked it, and want more of it, or they want to try it.

I wasn't trying to say they were trying to phase out beef, just that they were also promoting the consumption of horsemeat. I think that's where that ad comes from? The members who were promoting horsemeat are the ones insisting it's better for you than beef or pork....going so far as to post websites for the nutritional info and value of it, compared to beef and pork.

No crazy talk here!!! I know what I read, right here on HGS!!!!

Stormy, no..I think afew members said they have tried it..but it was not in the amount your making it appear.. If my memory serves me right, it was in the vicinity of 3-5 people. and I think all the "Id try it" folks were on a poll thread mainly, titled "Would you ever try horsemeat" or something to that nature...IF the question is asked, why not answer honestly, you know?

I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt horsemeat will ever "become the next red meat" in the US..the beef industry is to big..Im involved in the beef industry..no way at all would anything phase them out..so SAYING so shows me it IS a scare tactic. people saying they would "try it" or have tried it doesnt mean they have some secret agenda to mass market horsemeat to this country.

Being pro and saying you have eaten or would eat, or even posting a recipe using horse meat does not mean your intention is to become the poster child for legalizing the commercial sale of horsemeat. It means, you are not emotionally involved with the slaughter debate and have researched the properties of horse meat so you know what you are talking about, when you speak of it.

As the world gets smaller and people from many countries and backgrounds move to new countries, do you think it will have any effect on what people will be asking for in the market place? I wouldn't dream of eating raw fish either but since there is a market for it, it can be obtained. We've all heard of Sushi. Whenever there is a demand for something, someone is usually willing to fill it, legal or illegal. Black Market has existed since time began. There have already been reported cases of horses being slaughtered in back country, out of the way places where no one would find the carcasses for several days. Butchered in the same manner as the slaughter houses would use. Are they rare occurrances, or just not reported on the 'big news' stations?

That is the interesting question, isn't it?
I will admit, although I didn't know until later, I have eaten horse meat. I was in Europe at the time, and they not only serve it in restaurants, but specifically raise a breed of horse just for it's meat.

Would I eat it again? To answer honestly, if it was in front of me, the answer would be yes. The reason for that would be simple.... the animal is already slaughtered, so not eating it would be a waste. BUT, and it is a BIG BUT, I won't specifically seek it out, I would only eat it if it was already slaughtered and put in front of me.

However, I can say without any doubt, that the horse meat industry will never, ever be a challenge to the beef industry.... or even the chicken industry.

I have to say that I am really impressed at how civil this thread was... especially considering how emotionally charged some aspects of this discussion got.

I also like the fact that there were constructive ideas brought out... from everything I've read and seen, we still haven't hit the peak of this issue yet.
