Zoning laws would have to be changed if horses were to be considered pets instead of livestock. County laws are also different then city laws.

If people were allowed to treat horses as a pet they would have them in a tiny little yard thinking how cool it is. Then once they see how much poo, flys and work it is to have a horse they would be changing their minds. Insurance for those pesky little kids who just have to come pet the cute hossy when no one else is around and they get hurt, owners sued.

I can't see changing zoning laws etc as being a viable way of stopping the problem of a over abundance of horses.

Or perhaps because you could afford to take in more.

I will not sit here and say the closure of the slaughter plants, is directly responsible for the horse over population epidemic. But let the closure of the plants coincide with the economy taking an epic dump, and Tah-Dah, we are suddenly a nation with an equine problem.

Had hay not jumped to the moon last fall, would you have taken more in? Because if you are telling me, the reason you do not have as many now as you did before is because there just aren't any out there, well Stormy, I will have to call a bit of BS on that.

Beeks,
I pay 15.00 bucks for decent grass hay, 14.95 for a bag of Equine Adult for my goats and mini. I go through about 2 bales a month and a bag a month.
I haven't seen a difference in prices of feed at all. But I have noticed on Craigs list the free and cheap horses have really gone down these last few weeks.

I am probably over feeding my mini, but since he doesnt have allot of grazing I give him a little extra hay.

He passed away last month. I know how much I miss him, even when he was grumpy.

He passed away in his sleep.

Everything is more expensive in Cali. The hay I bought is last years second cutting, but he let me open a bale of my choice and it still smelled sweet and fresh. The same hay last year he was selling for $11 a bale. He is leasing the hay pasture with another person who gave him first and third and kept the second cutting. But for winter, I am going to want a good quality grass alfalfa mix anyway. No workouts in the winter time.

I feel so stupid. Is there a place on this forum that marks the passing of members? County and I were often times on the same page but even if he agreed with you he could make you mad

I am glad he went peacefully. I wonder what will happen with his broodmares.
