Arrow A wet horse in hot wether...

I'm on my way out to see Ollie, no riding since by the time I get there it's going to be in the 90's already! I was just going to hose him off, do some pampering, and turn him out in the grass pasture to graze and dry off for a bit. I have to do some massage work on him too... My question is, would it be a bad idea to turn him out wet, and would it be a bad idea period to hose him down when it's that hot out. I know water can be an insallator while in the sun but is it bad when it's that hot out when they aren't in the sun??

Unless you care about a dirty horse (rolling) I see no problem turning him out wet. And if you start with the legs and work your way up you can hose him down.

We hose them down and then scrape the water off with a sweat scraper. If you scrape it off, it can't insulate, but there is still enough there to help them cool down

Ha, the great thing about the grass pasture is there is no dirt! He can roll all he want I always start with the legs too.

Ya, I always use a sweat scraper. Would it be out to turn him out then?

imgacowgirl hit it spot on. When you hose them off, the cool water absorbs his body heat...then by scraping it off, you're getting rid of the 'heat'.....then with whats left...a breeze helps chill him more

And surrre you can turn him out...as long as you don't care that he's GONNA roll

The flies will be worse when he's wet, and if he can't roll and get dirty, then they really might be bugging him until he's dry.
