A New Foal???

Okay, I can't believe this is even happening. Last Tuesday I commented to my mom that I thought Sapphire was getting pudgy. However, you could easily feel her ribs so we figured no, she's fine. She is not huge by any stretch but jubby. Anyway, today my sister (who is in vet school) came home today and when she was grooming her noticed that she had milk and that she was waxed over! She also said that she was "soft" under her tail (although I'm not really sure what this means). Anyway, we're about 99% certain she is in foal. We bought her last October and were told that she had had a foal previously but they did not say anything about her being in foal.

Anything that we need to know? How do you get ready for something like this? I just can't believe I didn't realize this before now? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of ******** out right now.

(P.S. Please don't think we're totally ignorant for not realizing this before now...if someone said this to me I would think they were idiots, but we really didn't know.)

We're going to take her in tomorrow. We just noticed this about an hour ago. And by the way, why did they star out my word? I promise it wasn't bad!

I overheard someone at the feed store talking about how they had bought this mare and she was really fat, so they were having the vet out. Well, right before the vet got there, they went out to check on her and found a foal on the ground! So they ran down to the feed store to buy shavings for the new baby! They were totally shocked! So when the vet got there, he just checked the foal.

1. IF she really is waxed and her tail is soft, She MAY not wait until you get her to the vet.

2. IF she really is that far along, trailer her to the vet may NOT be the best idea either. If she slips she could hurt both herself and the baby. Can the vet come out to the barn instead?

Just keep an eye on her, I agree with Anna and you shouldn't move her...she needs no added stress!
Watch for pawing, pacing, sweating and lots of bowel movements!
Shavings are not the best thing for a new foal...I have always used straw.
When my mare foaled, she ate up to the point of water breaking so don't let that fool you either
That is about all I have to share...just make sure to keep an eye on her!

sheesh,LOL< sounds a lot like my story. we bought a paint mare,LOL< and i kind of had a hunch, and when her bag started enlarging, i was pretty sure we had a baby coming,LOL. i think we only had 2 1/2 mths,LOL, and now we have an awesome colt.only thing is, she was a maiden mare and didn't take so we are bottle raising him.
