Post A few grooming questions??

I bet every one is so happy to know I have more than 5 questions!

1/ Ok How many of you use Flax seed for your horses coats? And how well do you like it?

2/ Do you brush your horses teeth? I do brush Bubba's teeth every time I give him a soap bath. Is is okay to brush their teeth? Can you use tooth paste?

3/ Tail wraps? Is there a specific type/brand of tail wrap that lasts longer and gets the job done?

4/ My horse has a long thin mane and he seems to get irritated by the sweat that gets under his mane, should I cut his mane oor braid it? and if I should braid it what type of braiding should I use to keep it off his neck?

5/ How long should the bridle path be? I think it is as long as their ear while held back, am i correct?

6/ I'm pretty sure their is not a way to THICKEN a horses mane but it's worth a try...IS there a way?

7/ My horses tail is almost touching the ground exept for LOTS of little hairs near the dock, how can I help grow that out?

I'm done lol thank you so much for your time!

1. Flax seed works wonders!!!!!!!! At my old barn where I ride the old school horses, they get the flax seed everday, you should see the dappling on this one bay Morgan mare, and all of the coats are ridiculously shiny!! I am going there this Saturday so if you want I can take pictures and show you just how awesome flax seed is! I have yet to get some for Ruby, but believe me I am!

2. Haven't brushed a horses teeth before, I am also curious if this is okay to do. (I probably wouldn't use human toothpaste though)

3. Don't use tail wraps

4. If you want to keep the length, simply do a french braid down the side, it keeps it really short, but then you can undo easy and still have the length. If the length is not a big deal to you, then pull it. It saves you from braiding it (unless you are a speedy braider) every time you ride

5. Yes, I heard it is as long as the ear when held back. I don't always follow that rule though.

6. Hmm...don't know about that one, I would say no. Just like human hair there is only so many hair follicles. You can make it appear thicker but I don't think in reality it will actually be thicker

7. That stuff MTG, and also if you wrap the tail, it will prevent him from rubbing the hairs off.

How I keep my Arabian geldings tail laying on the floor is to keep it clean, braided and tied up then I made my own tail bags and tied in up in them. He played out when the sun was not out, his mail I kept in large thick braids often leaving the conditioner in till I washed it again and rinsed it about every other time I left it in and tied the braids up with yarn easy to loosen. Kept his coat nice with a daily blanket, hoofs painted with hooflex, fly bonnet on and he was good to go weekly. He got good supplements also for a very gorgous coat as he was always winning halter and Most Classic classes.

1. I don't use flax seeds, but I heard it works well.

2. I've never heard of anyone brushing a horse's teeth, weird. But I think would be quite funny to watch. Idk if that is ok tho, and i'm not sure about tooth paste.

3. I use a tail bag which I braid into the horse's tail. It is called sheeting, it works great, your horse's tail grows lots.

4. Either french braid it down the side like Brina said, or have someone help you cut it. If you show Wp you'll have to cut it more than likely anyways.

5. And yes your correct about the bridle path, unless you have a arab and then they usually cut them back further.

6. Not sure there is a way possible to thicken a mane. lol.

7. What Brina said.

Hope I helped

1. I'm using a product called Gen-A-Coat which contains flax seed. His coat is really pretty and shinier than my other horses which aren't getting it.

2. I'm sure you can brush your horse's teeth with just water and a toothbrush. If you have a gelding be sure to check his *can't think of the word* teeth (mares don't have them, they are on the side and by themselves) for tartar/plaque buildup. This buildup can cause gum soreness or infection if left long enuf. I just take some pliars and pull it off.

3. Try the sheeting method. Give me a minute and I'll get it for you.

4. Don't have that problem, so I can't help you there, lol.

5. Depends on the breed if you show, and you if you don't. Traditionally it was the length of the ear folded back, but now in reiners and cutters, you don't have bridle paths anymore. I cut mine about 2", just enough for the halter or bridle to fit through to keep from getting tangle in the mane. Arabs and minis are longer than others.

6. Try the MTG or Eqyss Mega-Tek. Is there a cause? Does he rub it out or is it genetically thin?

7. Same as #6.

1/ Ok How many of you use Flax seed for your horses coats? And how well do you like it?

I don't, but many people I know do and say they love it.

2/ Do you brush your horses teeth? I do brush Bubba's teeth every time I give him a soap bath. Is is okay to brush their teeth? Can you use tooth paste?

I don't think it is ok to brush a horse's teeth with our toothpastes. Their enamel is not like ours. Plus the added fluride might not be good either. Honestly, call your vet. If I hear from mine, I'll ask as well.

And it is the Canine teeth that you are thinking of that Geldings have, and most MOST mares don't have. But they can have them.

3/ Tail wraps? Is there a specific type/brand of tail wrap that lasts longer and gets the job done?

Vet wrap lasts pretty darn good. So do tube socks. Cheap, breathable, and work just as well.

4/ My horse has a long thin mane and he seems to get irritated by the sweat that gets under his mane, should I cut his mane oor braid it? and if I should braid it what type of braiding should I use to keep it off his neck?

The waffle weave one....can't think of the name......if I see a pic, I'll post.

5/ How long should the bridle path be? I think it is as long as their ear while held back, am i correct?

As wide as the bridle is what I do. But no longer than the ear for sure.

6/ I'm pretty sure their is not a way to THICKEN a horses mane but it's worth a try...IS there a way?

Nope, honestly, there isn't. Genetics is what determines the mane. However, keeping it from breaking off and making sure it is healthy helps it to reach its full potential.

7/ My horses tail is almost touching the ground exept for LOTS of little hairs near the dock, how can I help grow that out?

Make sure he isn't rubbing his tail. If he is, deworm him for bots or pin worms...usual cause of tail rubbing.
