oh my it's amazing what the media will trash. There is a situation in MO where a gentleman had his horses siezed and one of them was not his but he was training for someone else and according to the media the owner of said horse has to go through red tape to get her horse back. The owner of said horse has to have her property inspected to be sure that she has adequate means for said horse plus the two she has already. It's a bunch of garbage. Why don't they go after the real culprits that clearly treat horses like garbage. No, those people are hiding the suffering horses or are in the back woods of Arkansas where no one can see the horses suffering.

Jackson County Volunteers Against Pound Seizure
The Animal Spirit: Michigan Shelter Animals Used For Research
And seems The Animal control was SELLING dogs and cats for research as recently as a year ago. Makes you wonder if they are in part trying to take these horses to help make up their lost income from being stopped from selling pets for research???

Just saw this: there are TWO different vets saying approximately the same thing.

Dr. James Irving of Oakdale Large Animal Clinic
Quote:
The filly's body condition was about a 3 on a 9-point scale, with 9 being obese, Irving said.

"She looked like a horse that wintered outside in Michigan," he said.
Robert Sray, a veterinarian with Northwest Veterinary Clinic in Jackson,
Quote:
He said three were in poor condition, but two of them were more than 25 years old and all three were responsive and eating hay.

Sray also wrote that most of the horses in a herd of 40 were in good to fair condition, with no signs of illness and injury, and several mares were due to foal in the next few months.

From the rescue people's mouths
TheHorse.com: Donations, Hay Sought for Impounded Michigan Horses

Quote:
Steenrod said the farm was a breeding operation, and 30 of the impounded horses are broodmares nearing parturition. An additional 17 yearlings and several stallions were found locked in a barn on the property.
"We've got everything," Steenrod said. "From I-can't-believe-they're-still-on-four-feet-walking-and-breathing to some of them who don't look too bad. This is survival of the fittest at its rawest form."

I am not saying Matt and Jim did everything right, but I am saying, the AC did more wrong. The problem for me is that they are trying to get papers on the horses and they shouldn't be trying to do that.
How can AC cancel an appt. made by the owners ?

Henderson also said he was not informed the colt was euthanized until after the fact -- a reason they fought Animal Control to care for this horse.

"If a vet said that he had to be euthanized I would have listened, but I would have liked to have had an opinion," he said. "I would have had him seen by an independent specialist."

Henderson said he had scheduled an appointment for the horse earlier, but had to cancel it when the horses were seized.

When you have an AC that will do anything to make a name for themselves, this is what happens. An episode of Animal Cops is an enticing thing for these folks... which apparently the case has been on Animal Cops already!

The testimony from the vet the appt was made with was Officer Wheaton called to verify Mr. Mercier's appt. Officer Dunlap called back to cancel it saying horses were being seized and nothing was to be removed from the property. This was not the 1rst appt either. The 1rst had to be cancelled because of the time it took with the county vet. Neither animal was in imminent danger, per Vet testimony.

AC then waited 8 days to get a vet out there. Another 30 days later they finally got the 2 injured animals specialized vet care.

They also left a mare in the field who had just aborted while they were searching and seizing. She was colicking and soaked in blood. They provided NO treatment to her, other than to take pictures of themselves standing over her! They left the dead fetus (despite objections by Mercier because of possible Rhino contamination) out in the field for another 3 or so days! This was out with the rest of the herd.

The only horse that died is the one they murdered. Because everything on the farm was fed and healthy for the most part. Not because of the AC and Lelanau Horse Rescue's great care as they would have us believe.
