39 yr old Rescue

I have just rescued a 39 yr old Mountain Welsh from the auction. She has some really bad wounds on her legs, pretty much her entire leg (Both front) from the knee down are raw, and bloody. I had a vet look at her and she is doing well, but there is a problem the vet found. Misty has diabeates. He wounds can not heal at a normal pace. Is there anything i can do to help her out with this along with her insulin shots.
Also, she is very under weight. Is there any way to put weight on her with out adding a lot of sugar to her diet. Her owners did not take care of her. She acts like she 10 again. She is constantly running around and running after my brother as he rides his dirt bikes along th
e fence line.

Bless you! Thank you for not only rescuing, but rescuing a Welsh One of my favorite breeds!

I would be very careful and talk to your vet and even an equine nutritionist. Her diet is going to have to be monitored closely because of her insulin.

her age is a testament to the hardiness of the breed. If you get a chance, pictures please! And what auction did you get her at?

I didn't get her from an auction actually\. The owners didn't want anything to do with her. No one knew they had a horse, and one day they moved, and out of no where I white popped up. Someone who lived in the area who knew us called my dad. They said that if he didn't take the horse (Cause he knew we always wanted a horse) Then he would either send it to auction or call ASPCA.

Sounds like a very lucky pony to have found you. As Lazy_F_Ponies said ask your vet or another vet for help.

I did a google and found this link but I'm not sure it will help: http://petcaretips.net/diabetes_horse.html

Thanks, I'll check out the link. She seems very happy where she is. I've been talking to my vet, and she is help, the kind of person who is not satisified until the problem is solved in full. I will try just about everything, and anything until I get what I am looking for. And I like looking for different points of view.

That is very kind hearted of you. I do have a suggestion for feed; I feed my 32 yr. old gelding this - it is called Feed Easy made by Patriot. If you can find a way to get it, it is better than beet pulp, and all the other things I have tried. (believe me, I've tried alot of different feeds, none worked but this) It keeps my geldings weight on nicely, and it works. Good luck to you and Misty!

Good Job! It always makes me so gracious of people when I hear them say they saved a horse. Although I've never rescued a horse, I'd say Lazy_F_Ponies, who has LOADS of experience with rescued horses is definitley a good source to get info. from, and I believe she's right. Equinw Nutritionist is the way to go. They could tell all that with a side order of fries! LOL!

Thank you all for your help. I'll be sure to try these things. By the way, is that feed that was recomended a sweet feed? Because she cant have sweet feed. If anyone wants to read her story it's in general horse chat under '39 yr old horse, now in real heaven'
