OH WOW!!! What a heartbreak! . When it rains it pours. I hope she sees some sunshine. Sometimes things happen for a reason and when we look back we are thankful because of it.

Three foals, one mare..... lost. (and no, I won't say it couldn't get any worse. She still has four more mares to foal.)

I went to the store around 12ish. I got back and I had a message on my machine. It was Pat telling me to call her ASAP. I didn't like the tone of her voice. She sounded very upset.

I have called her back three or four times, no answer. I have left messages, no call back. I am sitting here shaking like crazy. I know it's not good whatever it is. If she hasn't called by the time TR gets home from school, (another 40 mins), I am going over there.

When you see this tread at the top with me as the last poster, do you hold your breath just a little?

Make that three foals and two mares.

14 yr old "family bred" mare, (not in foal). They owned her:

Sire
Dam
Dam's Sire
Dam's Dam
Dam's Grand-Dam

She came up to feed last night. She was missing at this mornings feed. A quick sweep of the open pasture turned up nothing. Rick went onto the adjoining property thinking she might have gotten over there somehow. Pat and Cletus (the Great Dane) went into a small strip of woods. Cletus found her just inside the rim of the woods.

Pat said it looked as if the mare just dropped dead where she stood. There were no marks or scratches on the mare, the ground was not torn up like it would be if there had been a struggle. She said the leaf litter around her wasn't even disturbed.

Her son came over and moved her from the woods up to the barn area so the vet could examine her. He did a field necropsy. Her guts were OK. No twists, no blockage, color good. Her heart looked OK (normal size) as did her lungs (no fluid or mucus). He said her liver was a little off in texture, but not much, color and size normal. There was no blood in the abdominal cavity or any other signs of bleeding out. Her stomach was ruptured. But he could not say 100% that it didn't happen when the mare was being moved from the woods to the barn. He also said that if the mare had a stroke, she could have hit the ground hard enough to rupture her stomach. He said that even if her stomach ruptured before hand, that isn't what killed her. A ruptured stomach does not kill instantly (according to him).

Anyway....... I told Pat that I was going to stop answering the phone when I saw her name on CID. She knew I wasn't serious. She even laughed..... a little bit. She told me the vet has started calling her on a daily basis just to see if all is well.

Pat said she had always felt blessed that over the many years, many horses, and many foals, that other than old age, they have only lost a handful of horses and that was stretched out over a 30+ year period. Before this year, they had never lost a mare due to foaling complications. They had lost only three foals at birth. One was born dead and the other two were the smaller foal from a set of twins. And one filly was a 2 yr old... they feel pretty sure she was struck by lightning. Now, they have lost FIVE horses within a week and a half.

I reminded her of the year that Tommy and I lost three foals. Two post weaning, one pre-weaning. Two died, one was put down due to a broken shoulder. The problem was, that was EVERY baby we had that year.

Yeah, know what you mean. I was thinkin the same thing this afternoon. It all seems so incredible, surely no-ones luck is that bad.

To tell ya the truth...... I wish I was making it up.

I have passed along the well wishes. Actually, I've passed along the website URL and told her to take a look see. I'm sure she will when the madness dies down.

Thank you all for your support and prayers.

That is all so heart breaking! My husband and I were just talking this afternoon and I told him about all the babies that HGS has lost so far this year. It seems like worse than last year. Am I right? I just joined HGS last year. Anyway there is this mare that he has talked about getting from a friend..... she is Radar's sister. He said he wouldn't mind breeding her. I told him that I didn't know if I wanted to take a chance at going through what some people have lately. It just rips my heart out. Let's hope the rest of the foaling season will be joyful.
