I know everything will be OK just as I know they will always have a stallion and will breed a couple of mares a year (even if it ends up just their mares). I guess earlier I was just over whelmed with a sense of her helplessness and despair and needed a sounding board.

As usual, you all have been great. I admire and envy the ability you all have to sincerely express your sympathy, offer support and advice, and completely understand the depth of the situation.

I am so pragmatic that it causes me to have a hard time dealing with something that isn't practical. IMO emotions are never practical so when they catch up with me, I am in deep doody.

Thanks to you all.

Thanks for sharing your story. Reminds me of my friend who is in later years and was telling me the other day that she just wanted one, maybe a couple of days to not do anything horse. No watering, feeding, mucking stalls, turning them out. I wish I could help her out but atm I'm not in the position to be able to do that. She would probably be frantic and worriesome while someone else was doing what she does every day. A lot of her horses have been born, raised, and died on her property and most are buried there also.

I feel for you and your compassion for your friend. Somedays we have to be in the bottom of the hole to be able to look up and seen the sun. ((HUGS)) for you both.

That is such a sad story.....I am so sorry to hear that your friend has had such a hard year. I feel horrible for her. To give up something that means so much to ones self, is very hard. I hope she continues to do something she loves and something that makes her happy. And if that something is breeding (which it sounds like, maybe not this moment in time, but once was) I wish her all the best.....It's such a shame to hear something like this happening to someone like her. She sounds so nice and it sounds like she is always there when you need a shoulder to cry one or a person to talk to.

Like i said, i wish her all the best in what ever she decides to do.

Lexy, I can fully understand your friends frustration, heartbreak and the feeling of "I am just DONE with this!" because it zaps so much out of a person when things go so awry....

I haven't had it happen in horses yet because I've just started my breeding career, but I HAVE had it happen in Dogs to me and I have said, three different times in the past 25 yrs I've been activily breeding dogs that "this is the LAST litter!" because things were just so mucked up at that point in time...

Of course after a bit of perspective and time to gather my witts about myself, I go back to the grindstone, continuously striving to produce that perfect dog

Sometimes though, taking a break from the stresses of breeding animals is not a bad idea either....it can help a person gather themselves and gain a different perspective, review where they've been headed and where they want to go from here.

I suspect your friend will feel a bit less devestated when the next foal hits the ground 'running'

What a heartbreaking story. The previous posters have said it more eloquently than I can ... but I wanted to say how very sorry I am about her losses.

Your friend sounds like an amazing woman. I know what its like to watch someone be so thoroughly disenchanted with their chosen path and see what it does to them. The only thing I've been able to do is offer my support, my shoulder, and my ear. I sincerely hope that your friend doesn't give it all up.

I'm so sorry she lost two of her babies, its heart breaking, maybe she is just depressed right now,and will be back to herself after some healthy babies arrive. But have you ever heard of bag worms, this almost sounds like what happened here to the TB foaling season,a bunch of babies were being born dead,or early arrivals, and they soon died after wards, the lucky ones did survive by having a iv in them in a equine hospital, the culprit was bag worms,I don't remember the exact word for them, but they will be in the tree limbs,in weeds,or real tall grass, the mares when they graze, ingest them, and the worms are full of toxin,it doesn't hurt the mare, but if she is packing a baby, they will expell the baby,or deliver a dead one, check to see if these bag worms are in the trees or in the pasture,I'm not saying this is whats going on,but it sure sounds like it,if this is the case, all mares that are pregnant have to be dry lotted, and given hay, please check to make sure this isn't happening.

I think you are talking about MRLS caused by the Eastern Tent Caterpillar.

When Pat was telling me about the colt, she kept saying that something wasn't right. The mares are not bagging like they normally do, both babies have been early... only by 7 and 3 days tho. And both mares pulled a sneaky. They didn't show any signs at all. She said she was thinking it was environmental. She asked me if we had little caterpillars all over the place. I told her don't think so..... Tommy corrected me and showed me one that was crawling on his shirt where he had been outside. Anyway, she said they were all over the place at her farm.

hmmmm???
