and tell the bad rescue, if they want to pick up the horse, they can also pay the vet expenses you are out. Since this horse has MAJOR issues, you were not expecting the tumor and stuff. Since the horse will probably NOT get proper care from what they have said. Tell them that too.

You need to tell this person to talk to an equine nutritionist. They recommend if you are going to feed grains- to feed 1 pound of grain per 100 pounds of weight. If a horse is a 1,000 pounds then it would get 10 pounds of grain. This person needs to talk to certified people who do the studies and know what they are talking about. 30 pounds of grain will cause more harm than good. You need to get some written documents from your vet who did the test and talk to an equine nutritionist through your local feed dealer or state extension service and keep a record of what was said. Keep written records of what you are doing with this horse so they cant come back on you for neglect. Keep a record of your daily feedings and vet visits and keep the records from the vet visits.

I agree with all the excellent advice given here.
Do they honestly think you would go to the trouble to call out a Vet if you were the cause?

I have a special permitt from the State to rehabilitate wild animals. The state conservation department told me in very strong terms to take my papers and go to a local rescue organization and legally remove a baby deer the people were trying to raise. The do-gooders had no clue as to how to care for the wild orphaned animals.

They were calling ME to ask for advice. I told them what they were doing would kill the deer. They disagreed and a small animal Vet backed them up.
I decided to take posession of the deer. It died before I could get there.
They had the nerve to ask me to bury it.
Their intentions are good their knowledge and manners are horrible.

Where to go and what to kiss when they get there sounds appropriate about now. Take care of the horse. That is who you answer to, the horse.
Sorry to rant but I have tried to work with these type organizations some and they are nothing I expected them to be.
I thought they worked closely with the State. Here they are held in contempt by most everyone. Tear jerking fund raisers shoud be their offical title.

Again, sorry to vent myself so here on your thread. I have had to bow up and call their bluff more than once.

Well, it is looking like I will get to keep her... they have not contacted me at all regarding her, since I sent her medical records and an e-mail detailing everything I do for her, down to the time, pound and ounce!

Super Step, vent away... I've run into a similar situation with feral cats here. You just can't relocate them and people want to "save" them. The cats are better off being trapped, neutered and returned to their colonies. They will never make pets and are best left where they are...

Anyhow, she does appear to be picking up some weight... but it is hard for me to really tell since I see her everyday. We got a nice 2nd cut of hay and she seems to be eating that much better. Everybody keep your fingers crossed for her to keep gaining so we'll have her through another winter!
